Mount Kilimanjaro , the Roof of Africa.
Tropical Glaciers in Africa are disappearing and are on the verge of extinction.
Africa's rare glaciers, including those on Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, and the Ruwenzori Mountains, are projected to disappear within the next two decades due to climate change.
- The retreat rates of these glaciers are higher than the global average, potentially leading to total deglaciation by the 2040.
- Tropical glaciers are a unique type of glacier found in the Earth's tropical regions, typically within about 25 degrees latitude of the equator.
Unlike the large polar ice sheets found in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, tropical glaciers are much smaller in size and are often located at high elevations on mountains.
βΆοΈImportance of Tropical Glaciers:
- Tropical glaciers serve as critical indicators of climate variability and climate change.
- They are sensitive to climate variations due to their location near the Equator and within the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).
