1-The Responsible Nations Index (RNI) is India’s first home-grown global ranking system designed to judge how responsibly a country behaves, not just how powerful or rich it is.

2-Unlike traditional rankings that focus mainly on GDP, military strength, or influence, RNI looks at how power is used, both domestically and internationally.

3-The index evaluates countries on three broad areas: how they treat their own citizens, how they protect the environment, and how they behave toward the rest of the world.

4-This includes factors such as governance quality, social welfare, environmental sustainability, respect for global norms, and international cooperation.

5-RNI covers 154 countries, using data from international and globally accepted sources to maintain credibility.

6-In the 2026 rankings, India placed 16th, indicating relatively strong performance in responsible governance compared to many major powers.

7-The United States ranked 66th and China ranked 68th, reflecting weaker scores in areas like global responsibility and sustainability despite their economic and military strength.

8-Singapore ranked first, showing that smaller nations can score high if governance and responsibility are strong.

9-The larger objective of RNI is to reshape global thinking, encouraging countries to focus on responsibility, ethics, and long-term impact rather than raw power alone.

10-Strategically, the index also reflects India’s attempt to shape global narratives and contribute its own framework to international governance discussions.
