77th Raising Day of National Defence Academy

The National Defence Academy was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Bombay State, Morarji Desai, on January 16, in 1955. Thus, while the foundation year of the NDA is calculated from 1949, the foundation date is taken as January 16.

The NDA’s motto is believed to have been inspired and extracted from the Bhagavad Gita verse Karmanyevadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana — “Your duty is action with no eye on the fruits it will bring”.

The Sudan Block

According to the NDA’s archival records, in 1941, the Sudanese government donated 1 lakh (Rs14 lakh) to recognize the gallantry of the Indian troops in the defence of Sudan in the North African campaign during World War II. Of this amount, on partition of India in 1947, Rs6 lakh was given to Pakistan and Rs8 lakh was used to build the block.

🌴 Prabhala Theertham

📍Konaseema, Andhra Pradesh

Prabhala Theertham takes place on Kanuma, the third day of the Sankranti festival.

The Story: A Meeting of Gods
Why does this happen? The legend says that the Ekadasa Rudras (11 forms of Lord Shiva) from 11 neighboring villages meet once a year at a specific coconut grove called Jagganna Thota to discuss the welfare of the world.

To get them there, villagers build “Prabhas”—giant conical towers made of bamboo, decorated with vibrant silk cloths, pumpkin flowers, and peacock feathers.

To reach the meeting point, these massive towers must cross the Kousika River. The villagers plunge into the water, balancing tons of bamboo on their shoulders to carry their God across. It is chaotic, muddy, and incredible.
