After BSF training, dogs of desi breeds displayed such agility that they left behind dogs of 116 foreign breeds. It was reported that inspired by PM Modi, BSF trained these dogs at the National Dog Training Centre in Tekanpur. Additionally, through breeding programs, their numbers have been continuously increased. This initiative has now been extended to auxiliary K9 training centres and regional units.
In the All India Police Duty Meet, BSF's “Riya” won both the titles of ‘Best Tracker Trade Dog’ and ‘Dog of the Meet’. It was reported that this was the first time a dog of Indian breed defeated 116 foreign breeds to achieve this feat.
