The Zanzibar red colobus monkey (Procolobus kirkii) is a primate endemic to Zanzibar, known for its unique dietary adaptation. Certain populations of this species have been observed consuming charcoal, particularly in areas where their diet includes a significant proportion of young leaves from trees like Terminalia catappa (Indian almond).
(a) The charcoal provides essential minerals lacking in their regular leaf diet, thereby supplementing their nutritional intake and promoting bone growth.
(b) The charcoal acts as a prebiotic, fostering a beneficial gut microbiome that enhances the digestion of cellulose-rich leaves and improves nutrient absorption.
(c) The charcoal adsorbs secondary plant compounds, such as phenols and tannins, present in young leaves, thus mitigating their toxic effects and allowing the monkeys to exploit a wider range of food sources.
(d) The charcoal serves as a dental abrasive, removing plaque and tartar buildup, thereby improving oral hygiene and preventing dental diseases in these primates.
