The dispute began with the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, which reorganized Indian states based on linguistic lines.Belagavi, a district with both Kannada and Marathi speakers, was included in Karnataka (then Mysore State), despite Maharashtra's claim that it should be part of their state due to its significant Marathi-speaking population

Maharashtra claims 865 villages, including Belagavi, Nipani, and Karwar, arguing that these areas have a predominantly Marathi-speaking population and should belong to Maharashtra.The state has consistently opposed the inclusion of these areas in Karnataka and has pursued legal and political avenues to reclaim them.
⚡️Karnataka's Position:
Karnataka maintains that Belagavi is an integral part of its territory, citing historical linguistic demographics and legal decisions.To reinforce its claim, Karnataka renamed Belgaum as Belagavi and constructed the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, where annual legislative sessions are held to assert its control over the region.
⚡️Mahajan Commission (1966):
The Indian government set up the Mahajan Commission to resolve the dispute. The commission recommended that Belagavi remain with Karnataka but suggested transferring some villages between the two states. Maharashtra rejected the report, while Karnataka accepted it.
⚡️Supreme Court Case:
In 2004, Maharashtra filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the inclusion of Marathi-speaking areas in Karnataka. The case remains unresolved, with both states hardening their positions over time.
