⚡️In News: Scientists exploring geo-engineering to slow Antarctic glacier melting.
Aim
• Build giant underwater curtains in front of ice sheets.
• Prevent erosion by warm seawater, delaying glacier collapse.
Why Needed?
• Polar ice melting at record rates due to global warming.
• Warmer air melts glacier surfaces, while warm seawater erodes their bases.
• Thwaites & Pine Island Glaciers → If they melt, sea levels could rise by 3m .
Proposal
• Construct a 100 km-long seabed curtain, rising ~200m in Amundsen Sea.
• Acts as a plug, preventing ice sheets from sliding into the ocean.
How It Works
• Restricts warm water inflow beneath glaciers.
• Slows ice sheet thinning, delaying catastrophic collapse.
