One more species bite the dust. The Slender-billed Curlew is now extinct. A recent paper says that there is a 99.6% chance that the Slender-billed Curlew is now extinct, with the last sighting recorded in Morocco in 1995.

The normal (or background) rate of extinction refers to the pace at which species naturally go extinct over geologic time due to evolutionary and ecological processes. Estimates suggest that the background extinction rate is about 1 to 5 species per year per million species.

Human activities have accelerated the rate of extinction far beyond the natural background rate. According to a study published in Science Advances (2015), the current extinction rate is at least 100 to 1,000 times higher than the natural background rate. This phenomenon has been termed the Sixth Mass Extinction or the Anthropocene extinction.
