India Signs Headquarters Agreement, Boosting Biofuel Development Globally

India is set to become the headquarters of the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), launched by key G20 members in September 2023.

The Ministry of External Affairs will sign the headquarters agreement, granting exemptions, immunities, and privileges to the alliance and its secretariat in India.

This development will provide GBA with an independent international legal persona, enabling it to function efficiently globally.

The GBA aims to drive biofuel development and deployment, reducing reliance on crude oil and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Punjab is one of the states in India with high use of pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides:

Pesticides
Punjab is the third highest consumer of pesticides in India, after Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Punjab also has the highest per hectare consumption of pesticides in the country.

Environmental health
The Malwa region of Punjab has been called India's "cancer capital" due to the excessive and unsafe use of pesticides and fertilizers.

Water contamination
Pesticides can enter water through surface runoff or leaching, which can contaminate groundwater.

In Punjab, 98.4% of cotton, 96.3% of sugarcane, 93.6% of paddy, and 91.7% of wheat are treated with pesticides

Why in the news - The deaths of 10 elephants in Madhya Pradesh’s Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve have brought renewed attention to a 1934 report by zoologist RC Morris on similar fatalities of elephants in Tamil Nadu.

About RC Morris Report:
• Origin: Written by RC Morris, Fellow of the Zoological Society, in 1934, documenting 14 elephant deaths due to kodo millet poisoning in Tamil Nadu’s Vannathiparai Reserve Forest.
