Atmospheric rivers : those long, narrow bands of water vapor in the sky that bring heavy rain and storms
.
Atmospheric rivers are shifting poleward, altering global weather patterns significantly.
Over the past 40 years, they have moved approximately 6 to 10 degrees toward the poles, increasing activity around 50 degrees north and south while decreasing near 30 degrees

This shift exacerbates droughts in subtropical regions and intensifies flooding in higher latitudes, including the Arctic, where it accelerates sea ice melting

. Changes in sea surface temperatures, particularly during La Niña conditions, are driving this movement, which poses challenges for water resources and climate predictions.

Atmospheric rivers (ARs) impact droughts and flooding in various regions globally:

California, USA: ARs contribute 30-50% of annual rainfall, alleviating drought but causing severe flooding and mudslides, particularly during intense events like the Pineapple Express.

New Zealand: In March 2019, ARs led to significant flooding, damaging infrastructure and producing rainfall levels twice that of non-AR events.

Iran: A rare AR caused record floods in March 2019, affecting one-third of the country's infrastructure and resulting in fatalities.

United Kingdom: Storm Dennis in February 2020 brought record rainfall, leading to widespread flooding and economic losses estimated at £360 million.

Fraser River Basin, Canada: ARs are linked to extreme rainfall and flooding events, with predictions of historic flood peaks by the late 21st century due to climate change impacts.

INDIA : ARs are linked to 70% of major floods in India from 1985 to 2020, including devastating events in Uttarakhand (2013) and Kerala (2018).

Consider the following statements regarding atmospheric rivers (ARs) and their impact on global weather patterns:

1.No two atmospheric rivers are exactly alike, and they primarily originate from moisture supply in tropical regions and are influenced by the jet stream's instability.

2.The poleward movement of atmospheric rivers has been linked to changes in sea surface temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific, particularly during La Niña conditions.

3.Atmospheric rivers are not uniformly distributed across the globe; for example, they significantly impact regions like California with heavy rainfall and flooding, while having minimal effects in areas like the Amazon Basin, which experiences different moisture dynamics.

4.Human-induced global warming is expected to decrease the overall frequency and intensity of atmospheric rivers due to a reduction in moisture availability.
