Recently an Infant in Chennai was diagnosed with Black Nose Disease.
Black Nose Disease is commonly referred to as the Chik sign, a symptom primarily associated with Chikungunya, a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes.
🦟The Chik sign or Black Nose Disease is characterized by dark discoloration of the skin, especially around the nose, in individuals affected by Chikungunya.
🦟 The viral infection is primarily spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
🦟 Common symptoms include high fever, severe joint pain (arthralgia), muscle pain, headache, fatigue, and rash.
🦟 Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), an alphavirus, is responsible for the infection. The disease spreads when infected mosquitoes bite humans, typically in tropical and subtropical regions.
🦟 Diagnosis: Blood tests such as RT-PCR or serological assays (to detect IgM antibodies) are used for diagnosis.
🦟 Treatment: primarily focuses on symptomatic relief as there is no specific antiviral for Chikungunya.
