The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), launched on 28 August 2014, is a significant financial inclusion initiative by the Government of India.
β Account Openings: As of August 2024, over 50 crore bank accounts have been opened under the PMJDY, making it the world's largest financial inclusion initiative.
β Balance Growth: The total balance in PMJDY accounts has crossed βΉ2 lakh crore, reflecting the scheme's success in mobilizing savings from low-income households.
β RuPay Debit Cards: More than 31 crore RuPay debit cards have been issued to account holders. These cards also come with a built-in accident insurance cover.
β Zero-Balance Accounts: Initially, 40% of PMJDY accounts were zero-balance, but this figure has dropped significantly, demonstrating increased financial activity and account usage.
β Women Beneficiaries: Women account holders constitute about 56% of the total PMJDY accounts, highlighting the scheme's role in empowering women economically.
β Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT): PMJDY accounts have become a primary vehicle for Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT), ensuring that government subsidies and other payments reach beneficiaries directly, reducing leakage and corruption.
β Overdraft Facility : An overdraft facility of up to βΉ10,000 is available to eligible account holders, helping to provide emergency funds, especially to those in rural areas.
β Expansion of the Scheme: The scheme was expanded in 2018, increasing the accidental insurance cover on RuPay cards from βΉ1 lakh to βΉ2 lakh for new PMJDY accounts opened after 28 August 2018.
β Jan Dhan Darshak App : The government launched the Jan Dhan Darshak app to help users locate banking touchpoints like ATMs, bank branches, and Common Service Centres, enhancing access to banking services.
β Financial Literacy: The scheme also focuses on increasing financial literacy among account holders, helping them understand and utilize financial products effectively.
