EAM S Jaishankar on 10th August handed over a major water and sanitation project worth USD 110 million to the Maldives, funded by India. The project spans 28 islands.

⭐ India-Maldives Development Partnership: The partnership is rooted in mutual benefits across health, education, infrastructure, and climate resilience. Focus on projects driven by the needs of the Maldivian people, emphasizing ecologically sustainable solutions.

⭐ Climate Change Adaptation: The project, funded by India (USD 110 million), is the largest climate adaptation effort in the Maldives. Provides safe drinking water to 32 islands and sewerage systems to 17 islands, impacting 28,000 Maldivians. Incorporates solar energy and supports Maldives in achieving SDGs.

⭐ Strategic Importance: Reflects India’s "Neighborhood First" policy and commitment to supporting climate-vulnerable small island states.

⭐ Geopolitical Significance: India strengthens its position in the Indian Ocean, challenging China’s BRI in the region.

India's retail inflation slows to 3.5% in July, falls below RBI's target for the first time in 5 years

Retail Inflation:

⭐ Retail inflation in India is primarily measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks changes in the price level of a basket of consumer goods and services purchased by households.

⭐ CPI is published by the National Statistical Office (NSO) and covers various categories such as food, fuel, housing, clothing, and miscellaneous items.

⭐ The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set a medium-term inflation target of 4% with a tolerance band of +/- 2%, which guides monetary policy decisions.

⭐ There are four types of CPI:

-CPI for Industrial Workers (IW).
-CPI for Agricultural Labourer (AL).
-CPI for Rural Labourer (RL).

-CPI for Urban Non-Manual Employees (UNME).

⭐ The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) uses CPI data to control inflation. In April 2014, the RBI adopted the CPI as its key measure of inflation.
