The violence spiralled into a genocide that killed 300,000 and displaced two million. The new war and latest bout of ethnic cleaning has seen another half-million Darfurians flee to neighbouring Chad.

The RSF and the Sudanese Army are currently in Saudi Arabia for talks on humanitarian access, but a ceasefire seems out of reach.

MALEMA SAYS KENYANS DESERVE MORE FROM UK

Pan-African leader Julius Malema landed early this morning in Kenya for the opening of a Pan-African institute. In one of his first interviews off the plane, the president of South Africa's third largest political party, Economic Freedom Fighters, gave his thoughts on the recent controversial visit of the British monarch, King Charles.

MAKEBA: WE JUST HAVE TO KEEP FIGHTING!

South African music icon Miriam Makeba died on this day in 2008 during a performance at a concert in Italy. For decades, her music ruled the African airwaves. Her melodious voice propelled her to the top of the music charts across continent, but it was her political activism against South Africa's apartheid regime that made Miriam Makeba a global icon.

Fondly known as Mama Africa, Makeba used her music and fame to put a spotlight on the regime's atrocities against Black people in South Africa. She also worked hard to unite Africans - including in the diaspora - in their struggle against systemic racial oppression.

Continued…..In this clip, Makeba explains why Africans around the world are engaged in the same struggle. She reminds us that diaspora Africans were taken out of Africa, and that - whether we are in Mozambique or Brazil, in Namibia or the US - actually, we are brothers and sisters. The fight for total liberation goes on, and it’s by uniting in our struggle that we’ll achieve our aim.

SOUTH AFRICA FM CALLS OUT ICC

In one month, Israeli air strikes have killed more than 10,000 Palestinians, including more than 4,200 children. Yet, the one body charged with prosecuting war crimes hasn't spoken up. That would be the International Criminal Court (ICC). South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor calls out the glaring double standard by comparing the ICC's silence to its response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
👏74🤔1🤡1
Continued….In the latter's case, the ICC issued an arrest warrants on 17 March for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova.

The court has long been accused of being a tool for Western imperialism, as seen in its selective application of justice. Its 51 defendants overwhelmingly have not been white, with the exception of Putin and Lvova-Belova, as well as Serbia’s Slobodan Milošević, who died before sentencing, and three South Ossetian officials. However, these countries do not count as being part of the global hegemonic alliance.

NIGER-BENIN MEGA PIPELINE APPROVED

They say money talks. And despite their major political differences, Niger and Benin look set to complete Africa’s longest oil pipeline and cash in. The West African neighbours have been at odds since the coup in Niamey overthrew a pro-French and Benin-friendly president. But not even that and threats of an invasion could derail the mega project, which promises to transform their economies.
A decision on the money?

WHY AFRICANS UNDERSTAND PALESTINIAN STRUGGLE

Award-winning journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates spoke out against Israel's 'segregationist apartheid regime,' based on his experiences earlier this year visiting the occupied West Bank.

In this excerpt from his 2 November interview with US news outlet Democracy Now, he described his experience going through an Israeli checkpoint and how the guards would determine if you were able to pass, based on your ethnicity and religion.

He drew comparisons between the segregation and apartheid in Israel to that of discriminatory 'Jim Crow' policies in the United States and said that the matter was not as complicated as laid out in mainstream media. It is instead a clear form of injustice and racism.
👍10
Continued…..The author is not the first to be shocked at the situation in the occupied West Bank. Human rights groups, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, as well as UN experts have all called the Israeli status quo in the occupied Palestinian territories an apartheid system of governance. Today, as the people of Gaza witness what has been called by many a genocide, the people of the Occupied West Bank are also suffering.

The Israeli military, as well as extremist settlers, have attacked Palestinians in the West Bank, killing more than 170 Palestinians and displacing hundreds from their homes since 7 October. This, on top of the more than 10,000 people Israel has killed in the Gaza Strip.

GAZAN CHILD DEATH TOLL SIX TIMES UKRAINE’S

There’s a grim contrast in the West’s reaction to children dying in conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. In the first three weeks of war, Israeli strikes killed 4,000 youngsters, according to UNICEF. That’s six times higher than total child fatalities in Ukraine, where fighting has raged for over a year and a half.

The sheer scale of atrocities being committed by Israel was recently laid bare by US senator Chris Van Hollen. In this clip, during a hearing on additional US military assistance, he whizzes through numbers which should ‘shake us to the core.’

But the cold reaction of US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is almost as alarming. His response represents that of many Western leaders. But we shouldn't forget these are the same people who, at the start of the Ukraine war, shouted themselves hoarse about the need to protect civilians. Smaller nations, like Estonia, even pushed for a no-fly zone - though it never happened.
🤬6👍4
Continued….Compare that to their reaction over the current destruction of Gaza.Palestine has no army, navy or airforce and has little to shield itself from relentless strikes by Israel. Despite that, the West has wholesale supported Tel Aviv’s bombardment, vetoed calls for a ceasefire and passed a motion granting Israel a fresh $14 billion to continue its aggression. Most of the bombs dropped on Gaza’s defenseless population are made in the US.

So why the appalling contrast? Could part of the answer be Ukraine is a white European country compared to Palestine which is located in the Middle East and is occupied by people of colour? Remember what Ukraine’s Deputy Chief Prosecutor, David Sakvarelidze, said on camera as the war unfolded in his country. He was 'very emotional' because 'European people with blue eyes and blonde hair' were being killed.

Whatever the reason, the horror of what is happening is clear for all to see. And so too is the West’s shocking response to it. Just watch this clip.

DID BLACK LIVES EVER MATTER IN US HISTORY?

A common criticism of the Black Lives Matter slogan is that it itself is racist - that the slogan should be: ALL Lives Matter. But the issue isn’t as black and white (pun intended) as all that. In the context of Africans in America, history is the crucial factor.

In this clip, late US activist and YouTuber Sandra Bland (responding precisely to comments on her page that actually ALL lives matter) points out that, when you look back, Black lives have never mattered in America - not since they were forcibly brought there from Africa. Bland herself would go on to become a victim of the brutality of the systemic oppression and violence that Africans in America are subjected to on a daily basis.

On July 10th, 2015, she was stopped by a White police officer for changing lanes without signalling. She was arrested during the stop for allegedly assaulting the officer who had stopped her.
👍4😢4
Continued….Three days later, she was discovered dead in her cell. Police claimed that it was death by suicide, but this claim was disputed by her family and friends, who suspect foul play. The police officer involved in the arrest was charged with perjury for lying about the details of the arrest, but the charge was dropped on condition that he never works in law enforcement again.

In May 2019, video footage that Bland filmed during the arrest emerged. It strongly suggests that the police officer's claim that he felt threatened during the stop was false. This resulted in calls for a new inquiry into the incident, which became one of the prominent deaths that sparked the Black Lives Matter movement.

The tragic ending of sister Bland's life makes her message in the video even more poignant. It shows that the lives of Black people in the United States are in constant danger of a system that oppresses and violates them. And because the problem runs so deep that it’s systemic - for, as a matter of fact, all lives, all races, are not treated equally - it’s right to focus on ‘Black’ in our activism.

What do you think?

El Salvador has revealed its true Afrophobe colours!

It’s rolled out a $1,130 fee for most Africans transiting through the country’s airports. Indian travellers will also be discriminated against and subject to the same charge.

The Central American nation says the collected funds will go towards improving airport infrastructure - but it fails to explain why only Africans and Indians are being forced to cough up for this.

The discriminatory fee was unveiled shortly after a visit by the US Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs. That’s led to speculation that it’s real purpose is to deter migrants using El Salvador as a platform to reach the US-Mexico border, where crossings are rising.

That doesn’t explain why Africans have been singled out, though. While the share of Africans making the journey through Central America into the US has grown, it’s still relatively small.

Perhaps Washington wants to nip this trend in the bud. But it’s a clear sign that anti-African racism is driving policy.

SHELL OIL COMPANY MURDERS ACTIVIST KEN SARO WIWA/ THE OGONI 9

On November 10th, 1995, the Nigerian government - then ruled by General Sani Abacha and heavily backed and influenced by British multinational oil and gas company Shell - executed nine Indigenous environmental organisers, known as the Ogoni 9. Among the organisers that were hanged for their political resistance was the influential leader Ken Saro-Wiwa. Ken Saro-Wiwa and the other Ogoni 9 were members of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), who fought to defend the Ogoni lands from environmental destruction and human rights violations by major oil companies. This is their story.

KENYA CRACKS DOWN ON PRO-PALESTINE PROTEST

Palestinian solidarity marches have been commonplace across Africa with sights from Cape Town to Cairo and now Nairobi.

However, the Kenyan leg has not been as smooth. Dozens of placard-wielding demonstrators calling for a just and lasting resolution to the Palestinian question were arrested on Thursday. It follows last month’s police raid on private premises where Pro-Palestinian supporters had gathered.

Kenya has had close relations with Israel across all administrations. For example, in 1976, Kenya allowed Israel to use its territory to carry out an operation in Entebbe, Uganda, to free captured Israeli hostages.

Today, Kenya still maintains ties in agriculture, security and trade, with bilateral deals with Israel totalling $500m in 2022.

“UK GIFTED KENYA ENGLISH AND DEMOCRACY” SAY WHAT?!!!

Sky News’ Andrew Bolt believes the British rescued Kenya from barbarism and the babel of strange-sounding African languages. Yet, if it weren’t for colonialism, Europeans would have been learning Swahili in order to interact and trade with us, for example. It boils down to the British specialisation of class divisions based on someone’s grasp of English - itself a product of interactions with many cultures and languages over time. And when it comes to democracy, the Brits don’t have a stellar record either, as their treatment of Julian Assange and others proves.

WEST’S RACIST MORALITY EXPOSED

Western nations and institutions like to play the role of moral policemen and human rights champions. But there’s a shocking double standard when it comes to who they protect.

In this week’s Africa in 90 Seconds we expose the grim selective morality of Pentagon spokesman John Kirby. It’s hard to believe he’s the same person, when you hear his concern for Ukrainians but lack of regard for Palestinians.

Sadly, as Ahmed Ghoneim explains, it’s nothing new.
Western nations have also stayed largely silent over horrific wars ravaging Africa, whether in Sudan or Congo to name just two.
