WHEN ISRAEL ATTACKED AMERICA
It’s hard to imagine, but Israel once attacked a US spy vessel - off the coast of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula - using fighter jets and motor torpedo boats. It happened on June 8th, 1967, during the six-day Arab-Israeli war.
Tel Aviv claimed it thought the boat belonged to Egypt (then The United Arab Republic) - one of the countries it was fighting.
34 crew members of the USS Liberty lost their lives - with 171 injured. Yet the US didn’t retaliate. (When news of the attack came in, it sent war planes to defend the boat - but recalled them before they reached it.)
A US investigation concurred with the Israeli claim that the strike was a case of mistaken identity. But some survivors of the attack beg to differ.

Continued…They are convinced the Israelis knew who they were attacking - and speculate that the plan was to blame it on one of the Arab nations Israel was at war with, so as to drag Washington into the conflict.
Another theory is that the Israelis didn’t want word of their planned operation to capture Syria’s Golan Heights to reach the Americans. The land grab began the very next day and was completed the day after that.
Whatever the truth of these speculations, the deadly incident did nothing to shake US support for its chief ally in the Middle East.

AIR STRIKE JUST MISSES GAZA HOSPITAL
The medical crisis in Gaza gets worse by the hour. Three hospitals can no longer operate because of a shortage of fuel, according to the Palestinian health minister.
Meanwhile, it’s reported an Israeli missile strike narrowly missed the Al-Quds medical facility treating hundreds of patients and sheltering thousands of civilians. Israel had ordered its evacuation last week but backtracked after doctors appealed.
It follows accusations Tel Aviv bombed the Al-Ahli hospital last week, which left nearly 500 dead. Israel blames the explosion on a misfired rocket from within Gaza.

KENYANS ANGRY AHEAD OF CHARLIE’S VISIT
King Charles will touchdown in Kenya at the end of the month - his first visit to a Commonwealth nation as monarch. But he could face a wave anger from thousands of Kenyans demanding compensation from the British Army. It’s blamed for starting a fire that ravaged central parts of the country and wiped out people’s livelihoods. Kenyan courts ruled the UK should give compensation, but guess what? No one has coughed up yet.
Oh, and they aren't the only Kenyan's wanting an apology. So too are former Mau Mau freedom fighters who were tortured during Britain's colonial rule.

SUDAN WAR AT 6 MONTHS
The two warring factions in Sudan have agreed to sit and talk at the invitation of the US and Saudi Arabia. The conflict, in its sixth month, has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, leading to the death of thousands, the displacement of millions and the destruction of critical infrastructure. The UN has warned that 10,000 children under the age of five could die by the end of 2023.
Previous negotiations have yielded nothing in terms of peace. Ceasefires have been broken within hours of being announced. Expectations are low for this latest round of talks, given the inflammatory rhetoric coming out of both sides. The focus, therefore, is likely to be on securing a humanitarian corridor.

GAZA STARVES AS
ISRAEL THROTTLES AID
The trickle of humanitarian aid into Gaza is insufficient to prevent a looming humanitarian catastrophe, aid organisations say. Tonnes of desperately needed food and medical supplies are piling up in Arish, on the Egyptian side of the border - but not enough trucks are going through the Rafah border crossing. Last Wednesday, US President Biden announced that Israel would allow limited deliveries of aid, provided they are not requisitioned by Hamas. Before the conflict, 465 trucks daily were needed to keep Gaza provisioned. Currently, only a handful of trucks daily are being let through - nowhere near what is needed to alleviate the suffering of blockaded Gazans.

MANDELA'S GREAT-GRANDSON: 'CLOSE ISRAELI EMBASSY'
In an exclusive interview with African Stream, Mayibuye Mandela, the great-grandson of South African anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, called on his country's government to do more to support the people of Palestine. An Israeli onslaught has, so far, killed more than 6,500 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. This comes amid the escalation that kicked off 7 October in Gaza in the 75-year war between Israel and Palestine.
Speaking on 24 October from Johannesburg, the political activist and commentator urged the African National Congress-led government to go beyond rhetoric in its support for the Palestinians. Mandela argued that the first decisive step that South Africa should take is to close the Israeli embassy.
Let us know what you think of Mandela's position.

The difference in Germany's response to the Holocaust and to the Namibian genocide is stark.
In the case of the Holocaust, Germany has not only accepted its moral responsibility but has also demonstrated its commitment to addressing the historical injustice.
The country has pledged 10s of billions in compensation to Holocaust survivors worldwide over decades and acknowledges the significance of this ongoing commitment.
Furthermore, Germany has taken several steps outside of traditional reparations to compensate for the horrors of the Holocaust.
In contrast, the response to the Namibian genocide can only be characterised by a lack of acknowledgement and of any genuine attempt to right the wrong.

SLAVES' WHISTLING WALK
Let's be honest and call the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade what it really was: The European Slave Trade. That's because the Atlantic Ocean couldn't have enslaved anyone. From the 1500s to the 1800s, adults and children from western and central Africa were brought to the Americas to work with no pay on plantations and in the homes of slave masters.
To ensure slaves would not sample their masters' food, they were required to whistle while carrying dishes from the kitchen—usually separated from the main house—to the slave owner's dining table. What is the name of this act? The Whistling Walk.
Chef Kevin Mitchell of Charleston, USA, explained in this 2019 TV interview.

KENYAN PARLIAMENT
BANS PALESTINIAN SCARF
A Kenyan MP has caused a storm after wearing a traditional Palestinian scarf in parliament. Farah Maalim Mohamed said he’d worn the keffiyeh in solidarity with Palestine amid Israel’s bombardment of Gaza that’s killed thousands. However, the speaker of the National Assembly told him to remove it as it breached parliamentary regulations. Mr Mohamed obliged and, despite pushback, urged everyone to back the Palestinian struggle.
Some consider the incident another example of Kenyan authorities stifling public support for Palestine amid the on-going war. Recently three activists with pro-Palestinian views were arrested on private property in Nariobi and later released without charge. Meanwhile, Kenya President William Ruto says he stands with Israel. But while condemning Hamas’ October 7th attack that killed 1,400 Israelis, he’s remained tight-lipped over the civilian death toll and humanitarian crisis unfolding in besieged Gaza.

BLACK FREEDOM VS WHITE FREEDOM
For too long, Africans have allowed whiteness and white supremacy to define our conceptions of freedom and success. Dr. Amos Wilson, a Pan-African psychologist and scholar, understood that lack of freedom for Africans was tied to a lack of power. European and Euro-American civilisation encourages Africans to define success and freedom based on their level of integration and service to Western empires. Dr. Wilson understood that Africans need power and that power comes only through self-determination.

SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS
TINUBU PRESIDENTIAL WIN
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu won this summer’s elections fair and square. That’s the verdict of the country’s Supreme Court which ruled against opposition claims of fraud.
It brings to an end a legal saga that’s plagued Tinubu since coming to power in May.
However, the ruling wasn’t without controversy. Judges refused fresh evidence questioning the president’s academic credentials.
What’s more, the victory doesn’t mean it’s now plain sailing for Tinubu. He faces a tough future after his reforms failed to stem an economic crisis ravaging his country.

Pan-Africanists for Palestine! As Africans, we have been subjected to some of the most brutal and dehumanising forms of oppression imaginable. The revolutionaries at the forefront of the African liberation struggle stand in solidarity with the Palestinian liberation struggle. Apartheid was wrong in South Africa and so is what is happening to Palestine. Settler colonialism has no place in Africa and it has no place in Palestine. Are we right?
