Continued- "REMEMBERING FUNMILAYO RANSOME-KUTI"

Fela said, 'Imagine insulting the highest representative of the British imperial crown in Abeokuta; oh man! I was proud. People in Abeokuta talked about nothing else but that incident.'

May she continue to rest in peace and power!

GET RISHI QUICK: WHY UK PM IS NO WIN FOR DIVERSITY

It's been one year since Rishi Sunak became Britain's prime minister. He's the first non-White person in the job. As with Obama (another disappointment!) in the US, some expected that he'd look out for the interests of the masses, including those fleeing to the UK in search of asylum or a better life - like his parents, who came from East Africa in the ‘60s. But Sunak is no man of the people - not Black or Brown or any people for that matter (unless they’re rich!). Here's a reminder of why.

PLO: THOSE WITH IDEAS HAVE NO POWER

For anyone that spends more than a minute studying Africa, one glaring contradiction stands out: the continent is abundantly endowed with sharp minds, brilliant ideas and natural resources - yet it is poor. Africa’s unimaginative leadership must take some share of the blame for this. As Pan-Africanist scholar PLO Lumumba puts it in this clip, the ones with ideas lack power, those with power - ideas.

One reason is the presence of neocolonial puppets. Colonialism was - at its core - about extracting Africa’s wealth. Western puppets have an incentive to maintain the status quo. The crumbs acquired from auctioning off their people matter more to them than the development of the continent.

Continued - PLO: THOSE WITH IDEAS HAVE NO POWER

Without a history of innovation, African ideas and the people who carry them are a threat to the elite and their positions. It’s unlikely that a corrupt, unenlightened minority would be in charge of affairs in an environment that rewards work and wit over tribal affiliation.

What else explains the disconnect between those with ideas and those with power? Let us know in the comments.

SOUTH AFRICA FM: COUNTRIES DESERTED PALESTINE

Countries have deserted Palestine. That’s the message from South Africa’s foreign minister Naledi Pandor, who says her nation will always stand in solidarity. She was speaking during a trip to Iran and reminded a press conference of Nelson Mandela’s words that South Africa would never be fully free until Palestine is free.

But while South Africa has been consistent in its condemnation of Israel’s occupation of Palestine, others have not. Several countries had begun normalising relations with Tel Aviv. Morocco is a prominent example and even recognised Israel’s claim over Jerusalem. Saudi Arabia, one of the Arab world’s most powerful countries, was taking a similar path in exchange for guarantees of American protection.

However, those plans may have to be shelved following the outpouring of Arab support for Palestinians during the Israel-Gaza war.

Israel continues to pummel the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of over 5,000 Palestinians in a little over two weeks. Tel Aviv launched the assault following Hamas’ October 7th attack which killed over 1,400 Israelis.

WHEN ISRAEL ATTACKED AMERICA

It’s hard to imagine, but Israel once attacked a US spy vessel - off the coast of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula - using fighter jets and motor torpedo boats. It happened on June 8th, 1967, during the six-day Arab-Israeli war.

Tel Aviv claimed it thought the boat belonged to Egypt (then The United Arab Republic) - one of the countries it was fighting.

34 crew members of the USS Liberty lost their lives - with 171 injured. Yet the US didn’t retaliate. (When news of the attack came in, it sent war planes to defend the boat - but recalled them before they reached it.)

A US investigation concurred with the Israeli claim that the strike was a case of mistaken identity. But some survivors of the attack beg to differ.
