BENEFIT: Proper Upbringing

Question: How should a man begin raising his children? I mean, if he wants to raise them with beneficial knowledge.

Sheikh Abu Ammฤr Yฤsir แธฅafidhahullฤh:

He should instill in them a love for masฤjid and teach them ettiquettes of the masฤjid. We lack fathers who teach their children proper ettiquettes of the masฤjid. You see a father eager to secure a spot in the first row while his child lingers in the back, playing, causing mischief, perhaps even opening water taps, and the child is not disciplined. Some people mistakenly believe that masฤjid are merely public propertiesโ€”neither theirs nor anyone elseโ€™s. As a result, when someone corrects a childโ€™s behaviour, the parents react defensively.

I urge parents to teach their children the etiquettes of the masฤjid.

Another important matter: begin educating your child with basic religious knowledge. The mother also plays a crucial role in this, especially since the father may be preoccupied. She should help her children to memorise parts of the Qur'ฤn and teach them fundamental Islamic sciences. As they grow older, their knowledge should expand accordingly.

However, guidance ultimately lies in the hands of Allฤh, the Almighty. Some fathers are diligent in raising their children with religious values, ensuring their presence in the masฤjid from a young age. Yet, once the child reaches adolescence and becomes more independent, he may abandon the masฤjid and turn away from the correct path he was raised onโ€”may Allฤh protect us from that.

BENEFIT: Lowering the gaze

Question: I often find myself looking at women, despite being an upright man. However, this habit persists within me. What advice do you have for me, and what means can help me overcome it?

Sheikh Abu โ€™Ammฤr Yฤsir Ad-Dubaโ€™ee แธฅafidhahullฤh

Remember the words of Allฤh, the Almighty (interpreted meaning): "Tell the believing men to lower their gaze..." (Qur'an 24:30).

Furthermore, when the Prophet ๏ทบ was asked about an inadvertent glance, as recorded in Sahih Muslim, he said: "Divert your gaze."

As for the narration that states: "O โ€™Ali, the first glance is for you, but the second is against you," our esteemed scholar, Sheikh Muqbil (may Allฤh have mercy on him), deemed it weak, though some contemporary scholars have considered it sound.

One must understand that looking at women who are not permissible for himโ€”non-mahram womenโ€”constitutes a sin. Some people mistakenly believe that the term ajnabiyyah refers only to foreigners such as Russians or Americans, whereas in reality, it applies to any woman who is not from oneโ€™s mahram (close, unmarriageable relatives).

Looking at such women is a sin and persisting in that leads to further transgressions and hardens the heart. Therefore, fear Allฤh, the Almighty, and always remain mindful that He is watching over you. The angels record everything you say and do; [as Allฤh said (interpreted meaning)] "Do they think that We do not hear their secrets and private conversations? Indeed, Our messengers (angels) are recording everything." [43:80].

Yes, Allฤh will grant the people of Jannah whatever they desire.

Allฤh says:
{ู„ูŽู‡ูู…ู’ ู…ูŽุง ูŠูŽุดูŽุงุกููˆู†ูŽ ูููŠู‡ูŽุง ูˆูŽู„ูŽุฏูŽูŠู’ู†ูŽุง ู…ูŽุฒููŠุฏูŒ}
"They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more." [50:35]

A child's imagination is vast, and they may express their desires in ways that seem unrealistic to adults. Rather than dismissing them, it is better to nurture their love for Jannah while gently guiding them away from admiration of characters like Spider-Man.

Know, dear sister, that cartoons, especially if they contain elements that contradict Islamic beliefs or undermine morals and ethics, are impermissible. The Marvel series, in particular, includes characters that distort and negate religious truths, such as those possessing supernatural abilities like bringing the dead back to life or having knowledge of the unseen. Some of these elements fall into the realm of sorcery and witchcraft, while others imitate the attributes of the Creator, which is impermissible.

Instead of saying that they can become Spider-Man, which might strengthen their attachment further, a better response would be to tell them, "What Allฤh has prepared is far greater than anything we can imagine; it is even better than what we can think of."

This response aligns with the statement of Allฤh in the แธฅadฤซth Qudsi:
((ุฃุนุฏุฏุช ู„ุนุจุงุฏูŠ ุงู„ุตุงู„ุญูŠู† ู…ุง ู„ุง ุนูŠู† ุฑุฃุชุŒ ูˆู„ุง ุฃุฐู† ุณู…ุนุชุŒ ูˆู„ุง ุฎุทุฑ ุนู„ู‰ ู‚ู„ุจ ุจุดุฑุŒ ูุงู‚ุฑุคูˆุง ุฅู† ุดุฆุชู…: {ูู„ุง ุชุนู„ู… ู†ูุณ ู…ุง ุฃุฎููŠ ู„ู‡ู… ู…ู† ู‚ุฑุฉ ุฃุนูŠู†}))
"I have prepared for My righteous servants that which no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever conceived. So recite, if you wish: 'No soul knows what joy is kept hidden for them as a reward for what they used to do.'" (32:17) [Bukhฤri & Muslim]

This way, you nurture his excitement while keeping him away from being attached to these negative influences.

May Allฤh bless your efforts in guiding your brother towards the love of Allฤh and Jannah.

A short biography of shaykh Abu Rayhaana Abdul-Hakim

Abdul-Hakim Kamil is a native of New York City by way of the Bronx where he grew up in a Muslim family. His father Ahmad died unexpectedly before Abdul-Hakimโ€™s second year after birth. His interest to study Arabic began in his early twenties. One fateful day while cleaning a file cabinet in the masjid he attended located in Harlem, he found a sheet of paper with the Arabic pronouns written on it, dated in 1971. Words could not describe his astonishment when he saw his fatherโ€™s name written at the top of it. This sparked his interest to learn Arabic.

Then, in 1998 at the age of twenty-nine, he travelled to Yemen in pursuit of Arabic and Islamic studies where he eventually resided for over twenty years. During his first year he lived in the capital city of Sanaa, where he struggled learning Arabic on his own, without a teacher. Within one year, he became proficient in the language, however he annoyed and harassed the people in the masjid inquiring about the meanings of words, phrases, and sentences. Once he learned Arabic, he was fortunate to study at the School of Hadith in the village of Damaaj. There, he memorized the Quran and embarked upon Islamic studies.

Upon his arrival, he found many of the non-Arab students struggling to learn Arabic and become proficient. Many of them became overwhelmed by these difficulties and eventually abandoned their studies. He observed these difficulties primarily stemmed from faulty study habits along with many deficiencies he found in the books that were written to teach Arabic. This encouraged him to write what became a 5-book curriculum that simplified learning Arabic with proficiency titled โ€œThe Beneficial Fundamentals in Learning the Arabic Languageโ€.

For over fifteen years, he has taught students from various parts of the world such as America, Britain, Canada, Russia, India, Africa and other places. Dozens of students have completed this curriculum and established a fluent understanding of the language, enabling them to pursue Islamic studies.

A young man came to the Prophet ๏ทบ and said, "O Messenger of Allฤh, permit me to commit Zinaa (fornication)."
The people around him rebuked him and said, "Mah! Mah!โ€
The Prophet ๏ทบ said, "Come closer."
So he came closer and sat down. The Prophet ๏ทบ asked him, "Would you like it for your mother?" He replied, "No, by Allฤh, may Allฤh sacrifice me for you." The Prophet ๏ทบ said, "And the people do not like it for their mothers."
The Prophet ๏ทบ asked, "Would you like it for your daughter?" He replied, "No, by Allฤh, may Allฤh sacrifice me for you." The Prophet ๏ทบ said, "And the people do not like it for their daughters."
The Prophet ๏ทบ asked, "Would you like it for your sister?" He replied, "No, by Allฤh, may Allฤh sacrifice me for you." The Prophet ๏ทบ said, "And the people do not like it for their sisters."
The Prophet ๏ทบ asked, "Would you like it for your aunt?" He replied, "No, by Allฤh, may Allฤh sacrifice me for you." The Prophet ๏ทบ said, "And the people do not like it for their aunts."
The Prophet ๏ทบ asked, "Would you like it for your maternal aunt?" He replied, "No, by Allฤh, may Allฤh sacrifice me for you." The Prophet ๏ทบ said, "And the people do not like it for their maternal aunts."
Then the Prophet ๏ทบ placed his hand on him (in another wording the prophet ๏ทบ placed his hand on the young manโ€™s chest) and said, "O Allฤh, forgive his sin, purify his heart, and protect his chastity." After that, the young man never turned to anything like that again.

I would recommend learning the du'aa mentioned in this narration, as the trials that draw a person to prohibited matters are in abundance especially in this era of modern technology and screens, where the things that lead to Haraam are opened up in abundance to us and our children.
