Sword Fencing and Esotericism:
This is a very little discussed subject in our community, but Esotericism, and particularly Pythagoreanism and Sacred Geometry, had a considerable impact on Fencing, and more specifically on the Spanish School called: Destreza. This more esoteric type of Fencing was called the "True School" vs. the "False or Vulgar School" and was considered a very pure spiritual science and a higher form of human movement and combat.

In this "True School" there was a series of strict geometrical proportions one needed to follow while stepping, defending and attacking and everything was calculated on the basis of one's own bodily proportions, including the length of: the blade, grip, quillions, sword holder, etc. But also the diameter of what was essentially your sphere of protection referred to as the "Mysterious Circle."

At the same time this School of Fencing used circle diagrams which were universal symbols of measurement ensuring the unity of the microcosm (the fencer) and the macrocosm (the mathematical geometry of the circle). Quite literally when using these circles lines as guides (sometimes even drawn on the floor with chalk) one moved in harmony with the mathematical principles of the universe, i.e., the Mind of God. A form of "Western Sword Taichi" if one wants to draw a simplistic comparison.

Here are some examples of these circles taken from various 'Sword Treaties' by Spanish Masters; note the similarities with traditional theosophical diagrams and even theurgical circles.
