News: Seven former #Ethiopian diplomats urge #US to distinguish opposition alliance from separatist movements

#Opinion: #Moyale: Gateway to shared prosperity, not territorial rivalry

Recent deadly clashes between #Oromia and the #Somali region in Moyale have displaced tens of thousands of people. Hirsi Abdulkadir Mohamed argues that the competing territorial and administrative claims require “an immediate ceasefire and a coordinated response” from the federal and regional governments to protect civilians and resolve disputes through lawful institutions.

He urges leaders to clarify whether Moyale is envisioned as a shared economic gateway or the basis for an exclusive political claim, contending that “a trade corridor does not confer exclusive ownership over the people and places through which it passes.”

The author also calls for an independent investigation into the causes of the violence and allegations against all armed actors, including security personnel.

The latest announcement would represent a further expansion of Ethiopia’s air combat and air defense capabilities if the stated deliveries and planned acquisitions proceed as described. The Su-35 is a multirole fighter designed to engage aerial and ground targets, while the S-400 is a long-range surface-to-air missile system intended to intercept aircraft and certain missile threats.

Ethiopia’s existing inventory has included Su-27 fighters acquired in the 1990s, two Su-30K aircraft delivered in January 2024, and older Su-25 ground-attack aircraft and MiG-23BN fighters. These aircraft have formed part of the country’s combat aviation fleet alongside more recent acquisitions from other suppliers.

The expansion of Russian military cooperation has also extended beyond weapons procurement.
