News: Drought, food shortages and child malnutrition deepen humanitarian needs in #Afar, #Amhara and #Tigray

Drought, rising food prices, shortages of essential medicines and disruptions to health services are compounding humanitarian needs across northern #Ethiopia’s Afar, Amhara and Tigray regions, with displaced children particularly vulnerable to acute malnutrition, according to a humanitarian assessment document seen by #Addis_Standard.

Displacement across Tigray, Afar and Amhara has largely remained within the same districts or zones, according to the assessment. However, the scale of new movements remains uncertain.

One of the clearest indicators of the crisis is the nutritional situation among displaced children in Tigray. A cholera outbreak in Wag Hamra zone in Amhara remains a concern, with humanitarian sources reporting limited availability of treatment supplies, including fluids. Mental health needs in conflict-affected parts of Afar also remain high

#Opinion: #Moyale: Gateway to shared prosperity, not territorial rivalry

Recent deadly clashes between #Oromia and the #Somali region in Moyale have displaced tens of thousands of people. Hirsi Abdulkadir Mohamed argues that the competing territorial and administrative claims require “an immediate ceasefire and a coordinated response” from the federal and regional governments to protect civilians and resolve disputes through lawful institutions.

He urges leaders to clarify whether Moyale is envisioned as a shared economic gateway or the basis for an exclusive political claim, contending that “a trade corridor does not confer exclusive ownership over the people and places through which it passes.”

The author also calls for an independent investigation into the causes of the violence and allegations against all armed actors, including security personnel.
