#Op_ed: From Strategic Asset to Regional Fault Line: #Djibouti at crossroads of red Sea power struggle
Djibouti’s strategic importance is increasingly becoming a source of vulnerability as #Red_Sea insecurity, #Ethiopia’s search for alternative maritime access, mounting debt, the #Afar insurgency, youth unemployment, and uncertainty over political succession converge, writes Adam Daud Ahmed.
He argues that although foreign military bases and port revenues have strengthened Djibouti’s regional influence, “the geography that made the nation powerful can no longer shield it from the consequences of a changing regional order.”
To safeguard its stability, the author emphasizes that Djibouti must actively diversify its economy, address domestic grievances through genuine dialogue, carefully manage political succession, and pursue pragmatic regional diplomacy.

Read #Addis_Standard’s editorial, “Break this chain of attacks”, from June 2026.
***
The most compelling evidence comes from the Patriarch of the Ethiopian #Orthodox Tewahedo Church himself. In responding to the attacks, Abba Mathias did not speak of a one-off incident. He appealed to authorities to “break this chain of attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
A chain. Not an episode.
For years, this publication has reported on recurring killings, displacement, church burnings, property destruction, and targeted attacks in East Arsi. Religious leaders have warned about it. Community members have warned about it. Survivors have warned about it. Yet the violence continues.
The obvious question is: why?
The answer lies in the complete absence of accountability.
