News: #Kenya overtakes #Ethiopia as East Africa’s largest economy in dollar terms, #IMF estimates show

Addis Abeba - Kenya has overtaken Ethiopia as #Eastern _frica’s largest economy measured by nominal gross domestic product (#GDP) in #US dollar terms, according to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) October 2026 World Economic Outlook (#WEO), a shift largely attributed to exchange-rate movements rather than faster real economic growth.

The IMF’s estimates show Ethiopia’s economy continuing to expand more rapidly in real terms, even as the depreciation of the birr reduced the dollar value of its output. Kenya’s comparatively stronger currency performance, alongside continued economic growth, helped increase the value of its economy when measured in US dollars.

#Commentary: From Military Victory to Political Settlement: Why #Ethiopia’s real test lies beyond controlling #Mekelle

On 3 October 2026, federal troops and the allied Tigray Peace Force (#TPF) entered Mekelle. Tesfatsion Dominiko argues that "taking a city is a military event. Settling the question that produced the war is sociological.”

He emphasizes that the 2022 #Pretoria Agreement faltered due to mutual failures, while rival armed factions and escalating regional tensions threaten to widen the conflict.

Tesfatsion underscores that lasting stability demands far more than military control, requiring credible elections, political inclusion, comprehensive reconstruction, and a negotiated federal settlement. He notes that “Ethiopia has won wars before. What it has rarely done is win the peace that follows.”

#Commentary: #Somalia’s Aid Paradox: Saving lives, sustaining dependency

While international aid has long served as a vital lifeline for Somalia, decades of reliance on external assistance risk entrenching long-term dependency, writes Abdinasir Ali Osman.

He argues that, as shrinking foreign funding collides with acute humanitarian needs, the central challenge is “whether assistance can save lives today while building the accountable institutions... that make tomorrow’s recovery less dependent on external decisions.”

Osman notes that breaking this cycle requires more than temporary fixes: Somalia must strengthen domestic revenue mobilization, improve transparency, and reinforce public oversight to ensure that “humanitarian necessity cannot become a permanent substitute for institutional development.”
