#In_Depth_Analysis: Critical humanitarian shortages threaten Amhara #IDPs amid NGO withdrawals and fresh displacement

Addis Abeba – Internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in camps in #Debre_Birhan are facing worsening shortages of food, medicine, healthcare and other essential services as humanitarian organizations scale back or withdraw their operations amid funding constraints, while continued displacement from conflict-affected areas places additional pressure on already overstretched resources.

#Addis_Standard spoke with several IDPs in the China, Woyinshet and Hayiq Jari 2 Turkey camps, who described deteriorating conditions and urged regional and federal authorities, as well as remaining humanitarian actors, to take urgent action.

The situation reflects a broader & protracted displacement crisis across the #Amhara region. As of early 2025, more than 660,000 people were estimated to be living across 31 IDP sites & collective centers in 7 administrative zones

The author argues that “Ethiopia’s multiple conflicts could become mutually reinforcing,” making the crisis harder to contain and increasing the risk of wider regional instability.

'The sound keeps coming back': children maimed in #Ethiopia's #Tigray clashes

Lying on a hospital bed, rolled-up blankets propping up the remains of her legs, 10-year-old double-amputee Iyerusalem is among scores of civilians wounded in northern Ethiopia after fighting erupted last month.

***
"I was in our compound with my older brother and our horse when we were hit. My brother and the horse died," she told AFP from Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in Mekelle, capital of the northern Tigray state.

Many of the wounded live in remote villages hours from the hospital along difficult roads where there has been fighting and shelling.

"Right now, my amputated legs hurt badly," said Iyerusalem, who comes from Qarsole village in Alamata district, south of Mekelle.

News: #Eritrean troops reportedly deploy in #Tigray as tension with #Ethiopia escalate

A local official in #Adigrat told AFP that Eritrean soldiers had been present in the city for about four days, saying the development had caused concern among residents. An eyewitness reported seeing troops in Eritrean military uniforms moving south along the main road, while another said Eritrean forces transported in large trucks and patrol vehicles were heading toward Idaga Hamus, about 20 kilometers south of Adigrat, carrying heavy weaponry.

Eritrean forces fought alongside Ethiopia’s federal forces against Tigrayan forces during the 2020-22 devastating war, which ended with the November 2022 Pretoria cessation of hostilities agreement. Relations between Addis Abeba and Asmara subsequently deteriorated. The war has killed upwards of 600,000 people. Both Eritrean and Ethiopian forces are accused committing crimes against humanity and war crimes during the war.

#Opinion: Beyond Irro’s U.S. Visit: Next steps for #Washington–#Hargeisa relations

President Irro’s September U.S. visit gave #Somaliland greater access to lawmakers, policy institutions, and business audiences, but “access by itself is not a policy outcome,” writes Zakarie Mohamed Abdi.

He argues that the real test lies in sustaining those relationships and turning discussions on recognition, maritime security, trade, and investment into practical cooperation.

The author notes that “Diplomacy can open the door. The business environment will determine whether investors walk through it.”

News: More than 20,000 migrants leave #Ethiopia for war-torn #Yemen in three weeks: #UN

At the same time, more than 3,700 refugees have reached Djibouti over the past three weeks after crossing the Red Sea from Yemen, while another 539 Ethiopian migrants have arrived from Yemen on their way home.

“Djibouti is therefore confronting movement in both directions: people fleeing Yemen are arriving as refugees, migrants continue travelling towards Yemen, and other migrants are returning,” Coissac said.

The latest figures underscore the scale of Ethiopia’s migration through the Eastern Route, one of the world’s major irregular migration corridors. Ethiopian nationals have consistently accounted for the overwhelming majority of migrants tracked along the route, representing roughly 91% to 97% of movements recorded in recent monitoring.

#Commentary: Recognition Without Redistribution: The paradox of power in #South_Ethiopia region

New South #Ethiopia Regional State president Tesfaye Beljige faces deep-rooted systemic challenges, writes Tesfatsion Dominiko. He argues that since the dissolution of the former #SNNPR, the region has experienced “administrative statehood without fiscal substance.”

Tesfatsion explains that creating twelve zones without a stable revenue base has left teachers unpaid and deepened public distrust, while dispersing regional bureaus across six cities has created a “geography of appeasement” rather than efficient governance.

To succeed, the author contends, Tesfaye must address fiscal inequities, corruption, and political repression rather than rely on superficial appeals to unity. Tesfatsion emphasizes that meaningful progress requires transparent budgeting and traditional reconciliation mechanisms, because “a peace built on silence is merely postponed conflict.”

#Analysis: #Negelle #Borana-#Moyale road left without maintenance for decades; residents demand urgent action

The vital road connecting Negelle Borana and Moyale in southern Oromia, a major trade and transport corridor linking the region to the Ethiopia-Kenya border, has reportedly remained largely without maintenance for decades.

Residents told #Addis_Standard that the road’s severely deteriorated condition has disrupted local transportation and trade while posing serious risks to pregnant women, patients, elderly people and other travelers.

A regional official in southern Oromia familiar with the issue confirmed that residents’ complaints about the road are valid but said the scale of the project places it beyond the jurisdiction of regional authorities.

“Because this road spans over 350 kilometers, jurisdiction, budget allocation and construction fall strictly under the mandate of the Federal Government.”
