#Commentary: One Corridor, Too Much Risk: Why #Berbera matters more than ever as Bab-el-Mandeb crisis exposes #Ethiopia’s maritime vulnerability
The Bab-el-Mandeb crisis has exposed Ethiopia’s structural maritime vulnerability, with more than 96% of its maritime cargo concentrated through #Djibouti, writes Gulaid Yusuf Idaan. He argues that Ethiopia needs corridor redundancy rather than simply another port, allowing cargo to be shifted between routes when disruptions occur.
The author explains that alternative gateways, including Berbera, #Mombasa, #Lamu, and potential #Eritrean ports, already exist. However, limited infrastructure, logistics capacity, and diplomatic constraints prevent these routes from functioning as genuine strategic reserves.
Idaan notes that “Ethiopia cannot change its geography," as it “cannot relocate the Bab-el-Mandeb or eliminate regional geopolitical competition. But it can change the consequences of its geography.”

News: #UN warns northern #Ethiopia escalation threatens civilians, aid operations
In a statement sent to #Addis_Standard today, United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia Ozonnia Ojielo said he was “closely monitoring” developments together with the humanitarian community and partners across the affected regions.
“The situation presents serious concerns over the protection of civilians, particularly those who were displaced by the last conflict, facing further protection risks, while new displacements are emerging,” Ojielo said.
“Aid workers have also faced incidents of kidnapping, extortion, and harassment, while public buildings and critical infrastructure have been occupied, damaged, or vandalized,” he said, warning that such actions “directly undermine aid operations and deprive vulnerable communities of critical assistance at a time of significant humanitarian need.”

#Opinion: Fake Admissions, Real Losses: Why #Ethiopia's study-abroad conversation needs better verification, not more promotion
Sanjay Laul argues that as study-abroad opportunities increasingly reach Ethiopian students through social media, WhatsApp, and agents, verification should become a routine first step rather than an afterthought.
He notes that while Ethiopia already has licensing and verification systems to protect overseas workers and is strengthening safeguards against academic fraud, similar measures are needed for study-abroad agents, scholarship offers, and university partnerships.
Laul advises students to verify institutions through official channels, seek full transparency on fees and eligibility requirements, and avoid agents who promise guaranteed admission or visas. He emphasizes that “legitimate scholarships do not chase applicants demanding money upfront.”
