#Op_ed: From Battle Lines to Common Ground: Conflict-resolution strategy for #Ethiopia’s political elites
This op-ed argues that Ethiopia’s new alliance of seven opposition and armed groups, including former adversaries, highlights the country’s unresolved political conflicts and the growing convergence of their grievances.
Rather than viewing the alliance solely through a military lens, the article presents it as a broader political signal, underscoring the need for credible channels through which competing interests can be addressed.
“Political disagreements must have credible political channels through which they can be expressed, negotiated, and resolved.”

In this #Pulitzer_Center-supported investigative report for #Addis_Standard, Natnael Gecho Betalo examines the precarious lives of Ethiopian migrants in #Kenya’s #Mandera_Triangle, where thousands work in domestic service, hospitality, transport and trade while facing arbitrary detention, extortion and eviction threats.
The investigation finds that “the survival of Mandera’s economy remains inextricably linked to the labor and resilience of the Ethiopian diaspora.”
Through interviews with migrants, employers, community leaders and officials, the report explores how undocumented migration and weak border systems leave workers vulnerable while also exposing Mandera’s dependence on Ethiopian labor.

#Commentary: One Corridor, Too Much Risk: Why #Berbera matters more than ever as Bab-el-Mandeb crisis exposes #Ethiopia’s maritime vulnerability
The Bab-el-Mandeb crisis has exposed Ethiopia’s structural maritime vulnerability, with more than 96% of its maritime cargo concentrated through #Djibouti, writes Gulaid Yusuf Idaan. He argues that Ethiopia needs corridor redundancy rather than simply another port, allowing cargo to be shifted between routes when disruptions occur.
The author explains that alternative gateways, including Berbera, #Mombasa, #Lamu, and potential #Eritrean ports, already exist. However, limited infrastructure, logistics capacity, and diplomatic constraints prevent these routes from functioning as genuine strategic reserves.
Idaan notes that “Ethiopia cannot change its geography," as it “cannot relocate the Bab-el-Mandeb or eliminate regional geopolitical competition. But it can change the consequences of its geography.”

News: #UN warns northern #Ethiopia escalation threatens civilians, aid operations
In a statement sent to #Addis_Standard today, United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia Ozonnia Ojielo said he was “closely monitoring” developments together with the humanitarian community and partners across the affected regions.
“The situation presents serious concerns over the protection of civilians, particularly those who were displaced by the last conflict, facing further protection risks, while new displacements are emerging,” Ojielo said.
“Aid workers have also faced incidents of kidnapping, extortion, and harassment, while public buildings and critical infrastructure have been occupied, damaged, or vandalized,” he said, warning that such actions “directly undermine aid operations and deprive vulnerable communities of critical assistance at a time of significant humanitarian need.”
