Egypt has agreed to South Sudan’s planned Grand #Fula_Dam after reviewing technical studies on the project, Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam said, as #Cairo simultaneously reiterated its objections to Ethiopia’s unilateral operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (#GERD).

According to the minister, the Fula project is among 36 projects submitted under the Nile Basin Initiative’s investment program. Egypt reviewed the studies, exchanged information, assessed potential impacts and participated in consultations before agreeing to support the project, he said.

Sewilam contrasted Egypt’s position on the Fula project with its position on the GERD, saying Cairo supports Nile Basin development projects when they undergo notification, consultation, information exchange and impact assessment…..

News: #Media_Authority suspends #Tigray_TV indefinitely; bars media outlets from citing its content

The Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) has announced the indefinite suspension of Tigray Television (Tigray TV), accusing the regional broadcaster of repeatedly airing content that it says “threatens national and public security, undermines national interests, incites conflict and encourages extremism.”

The #EMA said the indefinite suspension was imposed while exercising its “legally mandated responsibility.”

The Authority also issued a separate directive affecting other media organizations, prohibiting digital, broadcast and print outlets from citing Tigray TV as an information source or redistributing or echoing content it considers to have been illegally broadcast by the station.

The decision came a day after Tigray TV aired live the announcement made on Sunday, 20 September, by Zemene Kassie regarding a coalition formed by seven armed groups.

#Op_ed: Bab al-Mandeb Choke Point: Why #Washington must recognize #Somaliland, anchor at #Berbera

The capture of #Mokha and #Perim_Island by Iranian-backed #Houthi forces has altered the security landscape around the Bab al-Mandeb, posing risks to global trade and critical maritime infrastructure, writes Adam Daud Ahmed. He notes that “This development is not merely an extension of #Yemen’s internal civil conflict”; rather, it presents a broader strategic challenge to the Horn of #Africa and Western powers.

The author argues that Somaliland’s southern coastline and Berbera Port are becoming increasingly important to regional maritime security, offering strategic redundancy beyond #Djibouti.

He calls for stronger coastal defence, enhanced maritime surveillance and greater international security cooperation.

News: #IGAD urges urgent action as #El_Niño risks compound #Ethiopia’s worsening climate stress

The warning comes as Ethiopia is already experiencing severe rainfall deficits that have affected the country’s main agricultural season. FEWS NET reported in its August 2026–January 2027 Food Security Outlook Update that rainfall deficits had exceeded 50% of average across much of Ethiopia, with the June-to-September kiremt and karan/karma seasons among the poorest on record.

The stakes are particularly high because the meher harvest accounts for more than 85% of Ethiopia’s national crop production and is expected to be below average, with implications for food stocks and agricultural incomes. #Houthis push for control of #Yemen highlands as Trump is said to have called off strikes

Houthi fighters pushed to seize strategic heights in Yemen on Monday to cut off the #Red_Sea coast from remaining areas held by #Saudi-backed forces, after a report that #US President #Donald_Trump had called off #American strikes on the group at the last minute.

A lightning advance by the #Iran-backed group ‌this month has extended the wider #Middle_East conflict to a new theatre and further threatened global energy supplies. The US has so far rebuffed repeated pleas from Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to join the fight in Yemen.

The New York Times reported that the Trump administration had prepared to launch airstrikes on Sunday against the Houthis after fresh pleas from the Saudi crown prince. But the newspaper said Trump called off the airstrikes at the last minute, even as troops were loading bombs onto aircraft.

Following the 2026 BRICS Summit, the India-Ethiopia partnership stands as an important test of what the Global South can achieve, argues Malika Pandey.

She contends that, despite their deep historical ties and billions of dollars in investment, the two countries must move beyond conventional trade towards meaningful technological and developmental cooperation.

The author emphasises that BRICS’ real challenge lies not simply in expanding its membership but in translating diplomatic solidarity into economic power.

#El_Niño crop losses in #Horn_of_Africa add to global wheat supply squeeze as prices surge 43%

El Niño-driven drought and erratic rainfall are worsening crop prospects across parts of the Horn of Africa, including #Ethiopia, as global wheat markets face a separate supply squeeze linked to weather disruptions and the #Russia-#Ukraine war. A European Commission agricultural monitoring assessment said El Niño has contributed to crop failures in East Africa, with heat and drought affecting agricultural zones in Ethiopia and Eritrea, while Somalia’s Gu season ended with below-average production.

The pressure comes as wheat prices have climbed sharply in 2026. Benchmark Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) wheat futures and related indexes have gained roughly 43% since the start of the year, with wheat recently trading around multi-year highs. The rally has raised concerns about renewed food-price pressures in countries dependent on imported grain.
