In-depth Analysis: Armed groups’ alignment stretches across #Ethiopia; #OLA demands #Fano distance itself from #Wollega faction. Why both matter

Recent public debate has linked the #TPLF, #Fano, #OLA and other armed groups to discussions around the coalition. The OLA’s latest statement appears designed to draw a boundary between tactical or procedural cooperation and substantive political agreement.

“That distinction helps explain why disagreement with Fano does not necessarily constitute a contradiction with participation in a broader opposition process,” an Ethiopian political analyst told Addis Standard when requested to comment on the statement.

Discussions between the OLA and Tigrayan political actors did not begin with the latest public debate around the potential coalition of armed groups operating across Ethiopia. They have reportedly extended back several years.

This in-depth reveals that the Ethiopian Civil Service University (#ECSU) is embroiled in controversy including implementing a contentious new competency assessment system for its academic staff.

Addis Standard spoke with anonymous university staff members and students about concerns surrounding the university’s academic programs, student admissions and administrative decisions.

Although the university sought approval for 29 undergraduate programs, the Ministry of Education cleared only 18. Yet, the institution proceeded to recruit students by promoting unapproved programs on social media. “After completing one year of the foundation (freshman) course, I was shocked to learn that the program I wanted to study had been cancelled,” the student told Addis Standard.

#US lifts sanctions on #Eritrean military amid renewed #Red_Sea focus

The United States has lifted sanctions on the Eritrean Defense Forces and other Eritrean entities, in a move that could mark a shift in Washington’s relations with Asmara as strategic attention intensifies around the Red Sea.

The Trump administration removed the Eritrean entities from the U.S. sanctions regime on Friday, 18 September, according to a notice published by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Reuters reported that analysts see the move as potentially strengthening U.S. ties with Eritrea because of the country’s strategic position along the Red Sea shipping route, opposite Saudi Arabia.

The decision comes amid the expanding war in the Middle East and renewed international focus on maritime security in the Red Sea, a major route for global trade and energy shipments.

#US and #Denmark reach deal on Greenland, Trump says

The United States, Denmark and #Greenland have entered into an agreement for the US to ‌develop a significant military presence on Greenland, while prohibiting US adversaries from building their own bases on the island, Donald Trump said on Friday.

In a Truth Social post, the US president wrote that no US enemies would be able to make sensitive investments on the island without the approval of the United States and that the agreement had no expiry date.

"At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America," Trump wrote.

Earlier on Friday, Reuters exclusively reported that the US and Denmark were closing in on a deal that would result in an increased US military......

#US gives #UN more time to end support for #Somalia peacekeepers

The #United_States has agreed to give the UN another year to wind down its support for #African peacekeepers in Somalia, a document showed - a move that gives some ‌breathing space to a force that was fearing quicker cuts, but still leaves its future in peril.

Reuters reported in July that #Washington - increasingly frustrated with the fragile administration in #Mogadishu - said it would block the UN from supporting the African Union force which props up the government and helps it fight al Qaeda-linked militants.

Analysts have warned that any weakening of the African Union peacekeepers would severely undermine the government there and could exacerbate the political turmoil in a combustible region bordering the Red Sea.

News: #Ethiopia’s conflicts cannot be viewed in isolation from Horn of Africa violence, says Global Peace Index

Ethiopia’s internal conflicts are part of a wider, interconnected pattern of violence across the #Horn_of_Africa and cannot be viewed in isolation from regional conflict dynamics, according to the 2026 Global Peace Index (#GPI) published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (#IEP).

Ethiopia ranked 138th out of 163 countries in the 2026 index, with a score of 2.648, improving by one position from the previous edition. Despite the improvement, the country remains among those with lower levels of peacefulness globally, according to the report.

The GPI assesses peacefulness through 23 indicators grouped into three areas: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarisation.

#Ethiopia: Defense lawyer says Yohannes Buayalew, journalists rejected ‘unlawful pardon’ conditions and remain in prison

While around 600 political detainees were released weeks ago, approximately 30 others remain in detention, including politician #Yohannes_Buayalew and journalists #Dawit_Begashaw, #Meskerem_Abera and #Genet_Asmamaw. Defense lawyer Solomon Gezahegn says the detainees rejected conditions imposed through what he described as an unlawful pardon process, arguing that authorities conflated pardon with withdrawal of charges even though the two are legally distinct processes.

He argued that defendants whose cases have not resulted in a court decision cannot be required to seek pardon, as they have not yet been convicted or sentenced.

News: #Egypt says it backs #South_Sudan’s Fula dam after review, renews objections to #Ethiopia’s GERD

Egypt has agreed to South Sudan’s planned Grand #Fula_Dam after reviewing technical studies on the project, Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam said, as #Cairo simultaneously reiterated its objections to Ethiopia’s unilateral operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (#GERD).

According to the minister, the Fula project is among 36 projects submitted under the Nile Basin Initiative’s investment program. Egypt reviewed the studies, exchanged information, assessed potential impacts and participated in consultations before agreeing to support the project, he said.

Sewilam contrasted Egypt’s position on the Fula project with its position on the GERD, saying Cairo supports Nile Basin development projects when they undergo notification, consultation, information exchange and impact assessment…..

News: #Media_Authority suspends #Tigray_TV indefinitely; bars media outlets from citing its content

The Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) has announced the indefinite suspension of Tigray Television (Tigray TV), accusing the regional broadcaster of repeatedly airing content that it says “threatens national and public security, undermines national interests, incites conflict and encourages extremism.”

The #EMA said the indefinite suspension was imposed while exercising its “legally mandated responsibility.”

The Authority also issued a separate directive affecting other media organizations, prohibiting digital, broadcast and print outlets from citing Tigray TV as an information source or redistributing or echoing content it considers to have been illegally broadcast by the station.

The decision came a day after Tigray TV aired live the announcement made on Sunday, 20 September, by Zemene Kassie regarding a coalition formed by seven armed groups.
