News: #Sudan says it does not want war with #Ethiopia amid rising tensions

Sudan does not want to go to war with Ethiopia despite what it describes as an increasingly “hostile position from #Addis_Abeba”, Gen. #Malik_Agar, deputy head of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, said on Wednesday.

“We do not want to get involved in a war with Ethiopia,” Agar told journalists at a media forum in #Khartoum, according to Radio Tamazuj.

His remarks come amid heightened tensions along the Sudan-Ethiopia border and allegations from Sudanese military officials that Ethiopia has allowed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) and allied forces to launch drones from its territory. Ethiopia has previously rejected such accusations as baseless.

#Op_ed: #Western_Tigray's Warning Signs: Why civilian protection cannot wait

Western Tigray’s current tensions cannot be separated from the atrocities documented during the war in #Tigray, including killings, sexual violence, forced displacement, and arbitrary detention, writes Shushay Tewelemedhn Gebremariam.

He emphasises that Human Rights Watch (#HRW) continues to report discrimination and arbitrary detention of Tigrayans, while more than 740,000 people remain displaced. Moreover, renewed fighting and the absence of effective international oversight are heightening the risks.

Shushay underscores that “warning signs must be taken seriously while there is still time to act,” noting that "prevention is not an accusation. It is a responsibility.”

News: #Ethiopia’s Erta Ale pond found 12 times saltier than ocean, offering glimpse into limits of life

Ethiopia’s #Erta_Ale pond, located in the #Danakil Depression in the #Afar Region, has been measured with a salinity roughly 12 times higher than that of the open ocean, making it one of the most extreme aquatic environments known on Earth.

According to SpaceDaily, the pond has a total dissolved solids concentration of 433 grams per kilogram, or about 43.3 percent by weight. The measurement comes from a 2017 study by researchers Pérez and Chebude of Addis Ababa University’s Department of Chemistry, published in Aquatic Geochemistry.

Erta Ale is a shallow, crescent-shaped pond measuring about 60 metres across, with water temperatures of between 50 and 55 degrees Celsius. Its pale-yellow brine is dominated by calcium and magnesium chlorides rather than the sodium.....

Clashes kill 26 in disputed #Sudan-#South_Sudan border region: UN

Ethnic clashes killed 26 people and wounded another 82 in the Abyei region disputed by Sudan and South Sudan, the #UN agency there said Thursday.

Clashes are frequent in Abyei and the region's status has remained unresolved since South Sudan gained independence and became a nation in 2011.

The violence broke out Tuesday at the Amiet Common Market, the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (#UNISFA) said.

It followed the separate killings of a Ngok Dinka man and a Misseriya man earlier in the month "which heightened tensions between the two communities", said UNISFA.

"We are actively engaging with the leaders of the two communities who have reiterated their commitment to dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the hostilities," said Lieutenant General Ganesh Kumar Shreshta of UNISFA.

"Our priority is to.......

As #Iran war grinds on, Trump to face skeptical world leaders at #UN

When President #Donald_Trump addressed the United Nations a year ago, he touted the US bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites just months earlier as "totally obliterating everything" and said he had brought peace between #Israel and Iran.

Returning to the world body on Tuesday, Trump will face a deeply skeptical audience increasingly rattled by six months of war between US forces and an emboldened Iran, growing regional instability and a nuclear threat ‌that has not disappeared despite his claims.

Though battered militarily and economically, #Tehran has remained defiant, obstructing oil shipments through the Strait of #Hormuz and in recent days gaining new leverage as its Houthi allies in #Yemen tighten their grip on a Red Sea chokepoint, further spiking global energy prices.

The lightning advance by the Houthi militants....

#Italy readies navy to protect commercial shipping amid #Bab_al_Mandeb tensions

Italy is preparing for a possible naval mission to protect its merchant ships transiting the Bab al-Mandeb Strait as security concerns intensify around the strategic waterway off Yemen, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said on Thursday.

Crosetto said he and Italy’s chief of defense staff had agreed to activate the navy to prepare “whatever is necessary” to guarantee the safe passage of Italian vessels, Reuters reported. He did not specify which ships or naval assets could be deployed, saying the details would depend on the evolving situation and the necessary government and parliamentary procedures.

The decision comes as security fears around the Red Sea have increased following the advance of Iran-aligned Houthi forces along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and their capture of strategically located islands overlooking the Bab al-Mandeb.

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture has launched a digital animal identification and tracking system for dairy cows and calves in #Sheger_City, aimed at improving livestock productivity, disease monitoring, breeding and traceability.

According to Dairy Business Middle East & Africa, the system is designed to identify individual animals and consolidate information on livestock in a central database, allowing authorities to track animals throughout their production and movement.

Dr Sisay Getachew, an official at the Ministry of Agriculture, said modern information systems are important for improving animal production and productivity. Officials said the system would provide more comprehensive data to support disease surveillance and prevention, as well as breeding programmes and efforts to impro......

News: #OLA describes emerging alliance among opposition armed groups as procedural consensus, not political agreement

The #Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) has described an emerging alliance among opposition armed groups in #Ethiopia as a “procedural consensus,” stressing that it does not constitute an agreement on substantive political questions or authorize any participating group to determine the country’s political future.

In a press release issued on 17 September, the OLA said it was neither involved in nor a component of the emerging alliance, but acknowledged that cooperation among opposition forces “stretching from west to east and from south to north” was taking shape.

According to the OLA, the emerging cooperation is centered on two objectives…….

#Opinion: Beyond Corridor Development: A new urban vision for #Jigjiga’s sustainable growth

Jigjiga, the capital of #Ethiopia’s #Somali region, is undergoing rapid growth driven by population expansion and major investment, writes Hirsi Abdulkadir Mohamed. He argues that while recent corridor projects have modernised the city’s main streets, “sustainable urban transformation requires more than visible improvements along central streets.”

The author emphasises that Jigjiga must prioritise essential services, including water, sanitation, and waste management, to secure its long-term future.

Hirsi also calls for a modern digital land administration system, supported by enforced local development plans and transparent tax collection to generate the revenue needed to fund public services.

Two Ethiopian conjoined twins who were joined at the skull have been successfully separated following a 24-hour surgery at a children’s hospital in #St._Louis, #Missouri, in the United States, in a rare and highly complex pediatric procedure.

Hiyab and Wuhbto, whose skulls were joined at the crown, underwent the separation surgery at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, following about 300 hours of detailed surgical planning, according to the hospital and reported by the New York Post.

The procedure involved multiple medical specialties and required what Dr. Andrew J. White, the hospital’s chief medical officer, described as “sublime precision,” alongside meticulous planning and coordination among the clinical teams.

In-depth Analysis: Armed groups’ alignment stretches across #Ethiopia; #OLA demands #Fano distance itself from #Wollega faction. Why both matter

Recent public debate has linked the #TPLF, #Fano, #OLA and other armed groups to discussions around the coalition. The OLA’s latest statement appears designed to draw a boundary between tactical or procedural cooperation and substantive political agreement.

“That distinction helps explain why disagreement with Fano does not necessarily constitute a contradiction with participation in a broader opposition process,” an Ethiopian political analyst told Addis Standard when requested to comment on the statement.

Discussions between the OLA and Tigrayan political actors did not begin with the latest public debate around the potential coalition of armed groups operating across Ethiopia. They have reportedly extended back several years.

#US lifts sanctions on #Eritrean military amid renewed #Red_Sea focus

The United States has lifted sanctions on the Eritrean Defense Forces and other Eritrean entities, in a move that could mark a shift in Washington’s relations with Asmara as strategic attention intensifies around the Red Sea.

The Trump administration removed the Eritrean entities from the U.S. sanctions regime on Friday, 18 September, according to a notice published by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Reuters reported that analysts see the move as potentially strengthening U.S. ties with Eritrea because of the country’s strategic position along the Red Sea shipping route, opposite Saudi Arabia.

The decision comes amid the expanding war in the Middle East and renewed international focus on maritime security in the Red Sea, a major route for global trade and energy shipments.

"At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America," Trump wrote.

#US gives #UN more time to end support for #Somalia peacekeepers

The #United_States has agreed to give the UN another year to wind down its support for #African peacekeepers in Somalia, a document showed - a move that gives some ‌breathing space to a force that was fearing quicker cuts, but still leaves its future in peril.

Reuters reported in July that #Washington - increasingly frustrated with the fragile administration in #Mogadishu - said it would block the UN from supporting the African Union force which props up the government and helps it fight al Qaeda-linked militants.

Analysts have warned that any weakening of the African Union peacekeepers would severely undermine the government there and could exacerbate the political turmoil in a combustible region bordering the Red Sea.

News: #Ethiopia’s conflicts cannot be viewed in isolation from Horn of Africa violence, says Global Peace Index

Ethiopia’s internal conflicts are part of a wider, interconnected pattern of violence across the #Horn_of_Africa and cannot be viewed in isolation from regional conflict dynamics, according to the 2026 Global Peace Index (#GPI) published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (#IEP).

Ethiopia ranked 138th out of 163 countries in the 2026 index, with a score of 2.648, improving by one position from the previous edition. Despite the improvement, the country remains among those with lower levels of peacefulness globally, according to the report.

The GPI assesses peacefulness through 23 indicators grouped into three areas: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarisation.
