#Egypt’s el-Sisi meets Mohammed bin Salman, backs #Saudi call for secure Red Sea navigation

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah #el_Sisi has backed Saudi calls for secure and unhindered navigation in the #Red_Sea during a meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed #bin_Salman in #Cairo, according to a statement by the Egyptian presidency.

Sisi met the crown prince, known as MBS, on Tuesday as part of a Saudi delegation that included Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and other senior officials.

The statement affirmed that “relations between Egypt and #Saudi_Arabia can only be exemplary within the Arab framework, and that the security of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states is an integral part of Egypt’s national security”, while also emphasising efforts to achieve a sustainable political solution to the Yemen conflict. The Saudi-backed Yemeni government has lost key territories including coastal areas vital for oil shipping to the Iran-aligned Houthis....

News: #Sudan army intercepts drones targeting two major dams near #Ethiopian border

Sudanese air defenses intercepted drones targeting two major dam complexes near the Ethiopian border on Tuesday, while separate drone strikes in #Blue_Nile State killed four people, according to Sudan Tribune.

The drones targeted the #Upper_Atbara and #Setit dam complex in #Gedaref_State and the nearby Khashm al-Girba Dam in #Kassala State, Sudan Tribune reported, citing military and local sources. The attempted attacks caused no casualties or structural damage, according to the report.

The incidents came two days after Sudanese General Yasir al-Atta accused Ethiopia of seeking to seize Sudanese border territories, including the al-Fashaga agricultural area and parts of Blue Nile State. Ethiopia has previously denied Sudanese allegations of involvement in the conflict.

In Blue Nile state......

#Opinion: From Arrests to Accountability: Can #Ethiopia’s anti-corruption drive break the culture of impunity?

Following its August 2026 crackdown on economic crimes and supply-chain fraud, the Ethiopian government’s anti-corruption drive serves as a critical “litmus test of whether public power can finally be disentangled from private enrichment,” writes Adan Hussein.

He argues that, to succeed—particularly in peripheral areas where patronage can contribute to dry boreholes and unusable infrastructure—the campaign must look beyond headlines and arrest figures.

The author notes that “the most meaningful indicator of progress should not be the number of arrests made or press releases issued, but the recovery of state property and public assets” to ensure the effective delivery of basic services.

News: #South_Sudan president removes elections commission chair three months before polls

South Sudanese President #Salva_Kiir Mayardit has removed National Elections Commission (#NEC) Chairperson Professor Abednego Akok Kacuol and appointed the commission’s Secretary-General, Gabriel Bol Deng Majok, as his replacement, three months before the country’s scheduled elections.

The changes were announced on state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) on Tuesday evening, according to Radio Tamazuj. No reason was given for Akok’s removal.

The leadership change comes as electoral institutions face a tight timetable ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for 22 December 2026.

Political science professor Abraham Kuol Nyuon of the University of Juba told Radio Tamazuj that the timing could affect preparations for the polls. He said Deng’s familiarity with the.....

#Commentary: Connected Corridors, Converging Power: #Somaliland’s rise as #Red_Sea’s most contested node

Gulaid Yusuf Idaan writes that the Gulf, the Red Sea, the Horn of #Africa, the Indian Ocean, and the Eastern Mediterranean are increasingly operating as a single interconnected geopolitical system, within which Somaliland and #Berbera are emerging as a strategic hinge.

He contends that power today rests less on territorial control than on “network centrality”—the capacity to influence ports, corridors, maritime routes, and intelligence flows.

Idaan further stresses that Berbera’s connections to #Ethiopia, Emirati investment, and expanding ties with #India and #Israel have heightened Somaliland’s strategic significance, even as cooperation among #Saudi_Arabia, #Turkey, and #Pakistan generates competing pressures.

#Yemen’s #Iran-aligned Houthi group on Wednesday claimed it had launched missile and drone attacks against a Saudi Aramco facility in Yanbu and the Khamis Mushait airbase in southern Saudi Arabia, Reuters reported.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group targeted the Yanbu facility with dozens of ballistic missiles and drones, claiming the strikes caused fires and widespread destruction. He also said ballistic missiles were fired at the Khamis Mushait airbase.

#Saudi_Arabia has not confirmed the attacks or the reported damage, and the claims could not be independently verified.

The claims come amid a sharp escalation in Saudi-Houthi hostilities and growing disruption risks along the Red Sea.

At least 82 people were killed and dozens injured after a #gold_mine collapsed in Sudan’s West Kordofan State, with an unknown number of miners still feared trapped under rubble, according to a local administrator cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Wednesday.

The collapse occurred at the #Al_Zaraa gold mine, where miners launched an overnight rescue operation using rudimentary tools. Sixty bodies had been recovered by Wednesday morning, while another 22 were found later, AFP reported.

Trump hopes #Iran war nearing end as #Houthi-#Saudi fighting escalates

#US President #Donald_Trump said he hoped an end to the war against Iran was near, as the conflict, in its seventh month, escalated with Saudi aircraft pounding #Yemen and Houthi fighters launching drones and missiles at Saudi cities.

The Iran-backed Houthis' lightning advance in Yemen along the #Red_Sea and ‌their attacks on Saudi Arabia, along with attacks that damaged Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline, have extended #Tehran's reach in the war and heightened global oil-supply risks.

As the war expands into a new theatre, the United States tightened its travel warning for Saudi Arabia, banning government employees from travelling within 20 miles (30 km) of the Yemen border.

Still, just hours after reports of the Houthis and Saudi Arabia fighting, Trump told reporters on Wednesday evening: "Well, hopefully.....

News: New egg-eating snake species discovered in #Ethiopia’s Harenna Forest

Scientists have identified a new species of egg-eating snake in Ethiopia’s #Harenna Forest, one of the remaining large tracts of natural forest in the Horn of Africa, according to Phys.org.

Named Dasypeltis albigularis, or the white-throated egg-eater, the harmless snake belongs to the #African genus Dasypeltis, whose species feed exclusively on birds’ eggs. The snakes have specialized vertebrae in their throats that allow them to crack eggshells after swallowing them.

The species was formally described in the open-access journal Herpetozoa following research led by Arthur Tiutenko of Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, together with researchers from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich and South Africa’s National Museum in Bloemfontein.

According to Phys.org, the discovery began after........

News: #Sudan says it does not want war with #Ethiopia amid rising tensions

Sudan does not want to go to war with Ethiopia despite what it describes as an increasingly “hostile position from #Addis_Abeba”, Gen. #Malik_Agar, deputy head of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, said on Wednesday.

“We do not want to get involved in a war with Ethiopia,” Agar told journalists at a media forum in #Khartoum, according to Radio Tamazuj.

His remarks come amid heightened tensions along the Sudan-Ethiopia border and allegations from Sudanese military officials that Ethiopia has allowed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) and allied forces to launch drones from its territory. Ethiopia has previously rejected such accusations as baseless.

#Op_ed: #Western_Tigray's Warning Signs: Why civilian protection cannot wait

Western Tigray’s current tensions cannot be separated from the atrocities documented during the war in #Tigray, including killings, sexual violence, forced displacement, and arbitrary detention, writes Shushay Tewelemedhn Gebremariam.

He emphasises that Human Rights Watch (#HRW) continues to report discrimination and arbitrary detention of Tigrayans, while more than 740,000 people remain displaced. Moreover, renewed fighting and the absence of effective international oversight are heightening the risks.

Shushay underscores that “warning signs must be taken seriously while there is still time to act,” noting that "prevention is not an accusation. It is a responsibility.”

News: #Ethiopia’s Erta Ale pond found 12 times saltier than ocean, offering glimpse into limits of life

Ethiopia’s #Erta_Ale pond, located in the #Danakil Depression in the #Afar Region, has been measured with a salinity roughly 12 times higher than that of the open ocean, making it one of the most extreme aquatic environments known on Earth.

According to SpaceDaily, the pond has a total dissolved solids concentration of 433 grams per kilogram, or about 43.3 percent by weight. The measurement comes from a 2017 study by researchers Pérez and Chebude of Addis Ababa University’s Department of Chemistry, published in Aquatic Geochemistry.

Erta Ale is a shallow, crescent-shaped pond measuring about 60 metres across, with water temperatures of between 50 and 55 degrees Celsius. Its pale-yellow brine is dominated by calcium and magnesium chlorides rather than the sodium.....

Clashes kill 26 in disputed #Sudan-#South_Sudan border region: UN

Ethnic clashes killed 26 people and wounded another 82 in the Abyei region disputed by Sudan and South Sudan, the #UN agency there said Thursday.

Clashes are frequent in Abyei and the region's status has remained unresolved since South Sudan gained independence and became a nation in 2011.

The violence broke out Tuesday at the Amiet Common Market, the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (#UNISFA) said.

It followed the separate killings of a Ngok Dinka man and a Misseriya man earlier in the month "which heightened tensions between the two communities", said UNISFA.

"We are actively engaging with the leaders of the two communities who have reiterated their commitment to dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the hostilities," said Lieutenant General Ganesh Kumar Shreshta of UNISFA.

"Our priority is to.......
