From coercive militia recruitment, arbitrary detention, and extortion in Oromia, Amhara, and parts of southern Ethiopia to recent forced conscription campaigns in Tigray, a disturbing pattern is emerging: when political conflicts remain unresolved, ordinary citizens are increasingly being forced to pay for the failures of those who wield power.
The stories are strikingly similar: young people detained while traveling or working; farmers pressured into militia training; families forced to pay enormous sums for the release of detained relatives; quotas imposed on local authorities; and livelihoods disrupted as young men disappear into military camps.
This is not national renewal. It is national decadence.

When Ethiopia’s federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (#TPLF) signed the Pretoria Agreement in November 2022, it was meant to end two years of devastating war.
The agreement called for a permanent cessation of hostilities, the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of Tigrayan forces, political dialogue and the return of displaced people. When Ethiopia’s federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (#TPLF) signed the Pretoria Agreement in November 2022, it was meant to end two years of devastating war.
The agreement called for a permanent cessation of hostilities, the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of Tigrayan forces, political dialogue and the return of displaced people. Article 7 also required the TPLF to refrain from conscription, training, deployment and mobilisation of military forces, as well as preparations for renewed conflict.
