#Op_ed: Divided by Identity, United by Demands: #Ethiopia’s national dialogue amid deep-seated fault lines
Ethiopia’s #National_Dialogue has exposed four major political fault lines—ethnicity, religion, locality, and class—that continue to shape competing demands for power, recognition, and inclusion, writes Kamil Abdu Oumer.
He argues that “ethnicity remains the most dominant political fault line shaping Ethiopia’s national dialogue,” while acknowledging that other identities and interests also play a significant role in shaping political positions.
According to Kamil, the process has revealed a wide range of aspirations, from demands for recognition by historically overlooked communities and greater inclusion in state structures to efforts to preserve historical legacies and, in some cases, secure political dominance.

News: #Ethiopia’s #Eurobond restructuring wins creditor approval, but warrant raises concerns
Ethiopia has secured approval from its official creditors for an agreement to restructure its $1 billion Eurobond, marking a major step toward resolving the country’s external debt crisis. However, concerns remain over a new financial warrant included in the deal.
The Official Creditor Committee, co-chaired by #France and #China, said the agreement reached between Ethiopia and private bondholders in June meets the #G20 Common Framework’s requirement for comparable treatment of creditors.
Under the proposed restructuring, the Eurobond’s principal would be reduced by 12%, from $1 billion to $880 million. The restructured bond would carry a 6.15% interest rate and mature in July 2029. Ethiopia would also pay around $99 million in accrued interest.

#US and #Denmark push for nationwide expansion of UN arms embargo in #Sudan
The United States on Monday urged the #United_Nations Security Council to expand an arms embargo on the Sudanese region of Darfur to cover all of Sudan, saying the nation's brutal conflict risks regional expansion. “The Quest for Consensus: Analysis on #Ethiopia’s National Dialogue”
For more than four years, Ethiopia has been engaged in a “National Dialogue” process that promised a path toward consensus.
The process culminated in 38 days of deliberations. But what happens when we look beyond the official narrative?
Who was missing from the room? Who chose the 4,000 delegates? And can a process that excluded some of the country’s most consequential political and armed actors produce a truly national consensus?
In “The Quest for Consensus: Analysis on Ethiopia’s National Dialogue,” a three-part Addis Standard special edition, two critical thinkers who witnessed and closely reflected on this long-running undertaking examine what the process actually meant, what it achieved, and what it left unresolved.
