#UN probe says #RSF atrocities in #Sudan’s El Fasher bear “distinct markers of genocide,” warns #El_Obeid at risk
A UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan has released new evidence concluding that atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in #El_Fasher, #North_Darfur, bear the “distinct markers of genocide,” while warning that a similar pattern of violence could unfold in El Obeid if urgent action is not taken, according to the United Nations.
In a supplementary report released on 08 July, the Mission said its investigation documented mass killings, systematic abductions of women and girls, mass gang rapes, torture, ransom-taking, and enforced disappearances committed during the RSF’s October 2025 assault on El Fasher following an 18-month siege.

#Commentary: Policy Without Evidence: #EU budget support resumption, Schengen visa restoration ignore #Ethiopia's human rights crisis
In this commentary, Gemechu Abeshu and Mohammed Hassen argue that the European Union’s recent decision to resume direct budget support and lift #Schengen visa restrictions on Ethiopia signals a concerning normalization of relations, despite ongoing armed conflicts and persistent systemic impunity.
While #Brussels cites “substantial and sustained improvement” in migration cooperation to justify this shift, the authors contend that empirical evidence from #Oromia, #Amhara, and #Tigray points to serious human rights violations, drone attacks, and mass detentions.
They further argue that by prematurely dismantling its financial leverage, the EU inadvertently expands the state’s fiscal capacity and sends a troubling message that geopolitical priorities are being placed above fundamental rights.

The documents, the contents of which were confirmed by senior Sudanese officials, show that a U.S. proposal last month called for both sides to agree to an immediate 90-day humanitarian truce, allowing for negotiation of a permanent ceasefire and a civilian-led transition to elections.
It also called for a #UN-led mechanism to support limited withdrawals by the RSF, prioritising North Darfur, where the RSF recently took over the city of al-Fashir in a violent attack, and North Kordofan, a current target of RSF drone strikes......

News: #Ethiopia's endemic #Walia ibex reclassified as critically endangered amid sharp population decline
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (#IUCN) has reclassified Ethiopia's endemic Walia ibex (Capra walie) as critically endangered, following new assessments that found the species' population has declined sharply in recent years, falling below the threshold required for the highest level of extinction risk before extinction in the wild.
The Walia ibex, a wild mountain goat found only in Ethiopia's #Simien_Mountains National Park, had previously been listed as vulnerable after earlier surveys indicated its population was recovering.
However, the latest IUCN assessment, led by Paul Scholte, senior adviser to the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (#EWCA), concluded that the earlier assessment overestimated the species' recovery.

#Op_ed: Elections Without Choice: How Horn of #Africa leaders engineer polls for incumbency, consolidate managed democracy
Adam Daud Ahmed writes that the promise of the ballot box has mostly faded across the Horn of Africa. He contends that governments throughout the region increasingly depend on managed elections to obscure persistent authoritarianism, executive overreach, and limited civic space, all while maintaining international legitimacy.
The author emphasizes that “The primary threat to governance in the Horn of Africa is no longer the overt subversion of the ballot box but the sophisticated transformation of the electoral apparatus into an instrument of permanent executive self-preservation.”
He further notes that "the holding of an election is no longer a reliable indicator of a transitioning society; it has become the preferred defensive mechanism of the modern autocrat.”

#Borana: The Miiloo - Wal-argii ceremony and the Baannattoo method of electing the Borana #Abbaa_Gadaa
Structurally, the Borana Gadaa system requires a generation to progress through age-grade milestones: from Dabballee to Gammee, and from Gammee to Kuusa and so on. Every stage of this Gadaa life cycle is marked by distinct rituals and ceremonies. To select the future leaders of the generation and the nation—the Abbaa #Gadaa—an extensive evaluation and vetting process called the "Baannattoo" system is conducted while the youth are still in the Gaammee (youth) stage.
Major rituals are held to facilitate the transition from Gaammee to Kuusa. However, according to customary sequence, a Wal-argii (Grand Gathering) must precede the Nyaachisa ritual. This means the youth first assemble for the Wal-argii to build peer acquaintance and engage in traditional deliberations before proceeding to the Nyaachisa investiture.
