The International Union for Conservation of Nature (#IUCN) has reclassified Ethiopia's endemic Walia ibex (Capra walie) as critically endangered, following new assessments that found the species' population has declined sharply in recent years, falling below the threshold required for the highest level of extinction risk before extinction in the wild.
The Walia ibex, a wild mountain goat found only in Ethiopia's #Simien_Mountains National Park, had previously been listed as vulnerable after earlier surveys indicated its population was recovering.
However, the latest IUCN assessment, led by Paul Scholte, senior adviser to the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (#EWCA), concluded that the earlier assessment overestimated the species' recovery.
