#Trump announces plan to lift #US sanctions on #Turkey, signals openness to F-35 sales

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will lift sanctions imposed on Turkey under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), marking a major shift in Washington’s approach toward its NATO ally and signaling a possible revival of defense cooperation between the two countries.

Trump made the announcement on 7 July during a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, saying the United States was “going to be taking the sanctions off” because “we don’t want to sanction friends.” He also instructed senior officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to begin the process of removing the restrictions, according to Reuters.

The sanctions were imposed in December 2020 after Turkey acquired #Russia’s S-400 air defense system. https://www.facebook.com/20531316728/posts/10154009990506729/

Government spokesperson #Felix_Kwakye_Ofosu said the decision was taken because the deteriorating security situation and growing tensions surrounding attacks on foreign nationals could overshadow the planned meetings between the two countries.

The bilateral commission meeting, which Ghana was due to host in August, was expected to be co-chaired by #Ghanaian President #John_Dramani_Mahama and South #African President #Cyril_Ramaphosa. Officials said both governments remain committed to the partnership and will agree on a new date once conditions improve.

In a directive issued on 7 July 2026 to zonal and city Islamic affairs councils, the Council said imams and mosque attendants have faced sustained threats and intimidation extending to their homes in the aftermath of the election. It further alleged that armed assailants have targeted imams and worshippers returning from Isha (night) prayers, with some victims killed after attackers "opened a barrage of gunfire."

The Council said the attacks were.......

News: #Sudanese army claims recapture of strategic border town of #Kurmuk near #Ethiopia

Brig. Gen. Abadi al-Tahir, commander of the army's Al-Naba al-Yaqeen task force, announced the recapture in a video circulated by pro-army media outlets.

He claimed Sudanese forces inflicted heavy casualties and destroyed military equipment belonging to the RSF, forcing the remaining fighters to withdraw.

The reported recapture follows an intensified military campaign launched last week to regain control of Kurmuk, a strategically important town whose capture by the RSF and its allies earlier this year heightened concerns over instability along Sudan's border with Ethiopia.

#US launches new airstrikes on #Iran and Tehran fires back at #Gulf_Arab states

The United States launched new airstrikes against Iran early Thursday, and #Tehran responded by targeting #Bahrain, #Kuwait and #Qatar in crossfire that again threatened an interim deal intended to help end the war in the #Persian_Gulf.

The strikes came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said recent Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz signaled the end of the fragile ceasefire. The U.S. struck a variety of military sites and port facilities early Wednesday after Iran targeted several merchant vessels off the coast of Oman, sparking Iranian fire then as well.

But Thursday’s attacks appeared bigger all around, with sirens sounding at least twice in Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters. There was no immediate word of damage in the three Gulf Arab countries. Kuwait’s military said it was......

#Commentary: Policy Without Evidence: #EU budget support resumption, Schengen visa restoration ignore #Ethiopia's human rights crisis

In this commentary, Gemechu Abeshu and Mohammed Hassen argue that the European Union’s recent decision to resume direct budget support and lift #Schengen visa restrictions on Ethiopia signals a concerning normalization of relations, despite ongoing armed conflicts and persistent systemic impunity.

While #Brussels cites “substantial and sustained improvement” in migration cooperation to justify this shift, the authors contend that empirical evidence from #Oromia, #Amhara, and #Tigray points to serious human rights violations, drone attacks, and mass detentions.

They further argue that by prematurely dismantling its financial leverage, the EU inadvertently expands the state’s fiscal capacity and sends a troubling message that geopolitical priorities are being placed above fundamental rights.

#Ethiopia gains ground in #Somalia’s khat market as #Kenyan exports decline: report

Ethiopia has strengthened its position in Somalia’s khat market, contributing to a decline in Kenya’s miraa exports and earnings during the first quarter of 2026, according to a report by Kenya’s Daily Nation, citing data from the country’s Agriculture and Food Authority (#AFA).

Export earnings also declined to 3.09 billion Kenyan shillings from 3.56 billion shillings, representing a loss of nearly 470 million shillings, Daily Nation reported, citing the authority.

The report attributed the decline largely to intensified competition from Ethiopia, whose proximity to Somalia allows exporters to deliver fresher khat at lower .......
