#Israeli soldiers of #African heritage, “especially Ethiopians,” deployed to #Somaliland: report

Israel deployed a contingent of #Ethiopian-origin Israeli soldiers to Somaliland earlier this year, according to a report by Middle East Eye (MEE) citing a senior Somali government official.

The unnamed official told the outlet that around 50 Israeli soldiers were sent to Somaliland shortly after Israel formally recognized the self-declared republic in December 2025.

According to the official, the soldiers were selected from Israelis of African heritage, “especially Ethiopians,” to avoid drawing attention and to blend in more easily with the local population.

Israeli military declined to comment on the allegation, while Somaliland authorities did not respond to requests for comment, the report further said.

This comes amid growing security cooperation between Israel and Somaliland.

Confirmed Ebola cases in #Congo outbreak top 1,000 with 254 deaths, authorities say

Confirmed cases in the #Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo have reached 1,003, including 254 deaths, officials said, as tracing those who had been in contact with patients remains a major challenge.

A total of 100 people have recovered in the outbreak concentrated in the #Ituri province since it was declared on May 15, Congo’s Ministry of Health said Sunday. At least 365 patients are in hospitals or in isolation, it said.

The Ebola outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which has no vaccines or treatment, was the worst ever in its first month. Officials admit there could be far more cases they still don’t know about and that the peak of the outbreak is still ahead.

Contact tracing remains a key issue for local authorities, who have only achieved a 55% coverage rate, the ministry said.

“If you want to control an.....

#Op_ed: Fatal Power of Words: Dehumanizing language and conflict analysis in #Ethiopia

Gebre Selassie Araya reflects on a recent dispute between Kjetil Tronvoll, Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies, and Professor Clionadh Raleigh, Director of the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (#ACLED), which has reignited debate over ethics in conflict analysis following Raleigh’s use of the term “cancer” to describe the #TPLF during an ACLED podcast.

He argues that “mass atrocities do not begin with weapons; they begin with words,” noting that dehumanizing terms such as “cancer,” “weeds,” and “gangrene” were widely documented during the #Tigray war and often preceded violence against civilians.

The author emphasizes that “those who analyze conflict must never allow themselves to use the vocabulary of war-makers.”

#US warns #RSF, allied forces ‘must cease’ any action around #Sudan’s #El_Obeid amid fears of imminent atrocities

The United States has warned that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied forces must cease actions that could endanger civilians after reports emerged that the paramilitary force is massing troops around the strategic Sudanese city of El Obeid, raising fears of a major escalation in the conflict.

In a statement on Monday, the U.S. said it was “deeply concerned” by reports that RSF and allied forces were concentrating fighters around El Obeid in a manner that “significantly increases the risk of violence against civilians,” including attacks on civilian infrastructure and further escalation across the Kordofan region.

News: #Ethiopia among countries seeing surge in #Chinese EV sales, but charging infrastructure struggles to keep pace

Ethiopia's push toward electric mobility is gaining renewed momentum as rising global oil prices following the Iran conflict accelerate demand for electric vehicles (#EVs), although limited charging infrastructure remains a major obstacle, according to an analysis by the Associated Press.

AP reported that disruptions to global energy supplies following the blockade of the Strait of #Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's crude oil and liquefied natural gas passes, have driven up fuel prices across #Asia and #Africa, encouraging consumers and governments to shift more rapidly toward electric vehicles.

The report said Ethiopia is among countries embracing electrification to reduce dependence on imported fuel and lower the cost of fuel subsidies. The trend coincides with a sharp increase in Chinese EV exports,....

#Britain ‘failed to intervene in #Sudan massacre to maintain #UAE ties’

Officials ignored intelligence on the ‘genocidal’ siege of El Fasher to protect relations with Abu Dhabi, parliamentary committee told

The Government failed to intervene in a “genocidal” massacre in Sudan due to concerns it could damage Britain’s relationship with the United Arab Emirates, a leading war crimes investigator has told Parliament.

But despite the warnings it failed to act, with officials citing political concern over the reaction of the UAE which was backing Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mr Raymond told the International Development Committee, appointed by the House of Commons to scrutinise the work of the FCDO, on Tuesday.

The UAE has been widely accused of smuggling arms to the RSF – something it has strenuously denied.
