Ethiopia’s budget deficit is projected to widen to 1.4% of gross domestic product in the coming fiscal year.
The government plans to increase spending by a fifth to 2.34 trillion birr ($14.8 billion) in the year starting July, creating a shortfall of 308.6 billion birr, most of which will be plugged domestically, Finance Minister Ahmed Shide said in a budget speech.
That financing gap compares with 1% of GDP in the current fiscal year — the lowest in the past seven years — & 4.1% recorded in the 2024-25 period.
“Compared to this year’s budget, next year’s budget shows an increase,” Ahmed told lawmakers Thursday. “It is important to understand that the increase is done primarily considering expenses linked to the crisis in the Middle East.”

The training is being carried out in #Arba_Minch, southern Ethiopia, by instructors working with the Polish Center for International Aid Foundation (PCPM), which has provided humanitarian support to the country for years.
The two-week course focuses on practical rescue skills, including firefighting, first aid, emergency communication and team management during rescue operations.
Instructors are also teaching firefighters how to use specialist equipment, including tools carried on fire trucks, water fittings and extinguishing foam.

Addis Abeba – At least 28 people were killed after a public transport vehicle traveling from Dessie to Addis Abeba veered off the road and plunged into a ravine along the Harego road between Dessie and Kombolcha, according to Amhara Regional State Communication Bureau.
The accident occurred on 15 June and also left several passengers injured, with some reported to have sustained serious injuries.
According to the bureau, the vehicle fell into a ravine estimated to be about 100 meters deep after the crash.
Authorities said efforts were underway to transport survivors to nearby health facilities for treatment.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

#Ethiopian coffee sees growing demand in #Chinese market
