This follows the unjustified measure taken against Addis Standard by the Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) through the announcement of the “revocation” of our registration certificate. As a direct consequence, the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) declined to issue accreditation badges to the ten journalists and two camera crew members whose names we formally submitted in compliance with the Board’s accreditation requirements.
This outcome is not an isolated administrative decision. Rather, it reflects a broader and sustained pattern of institutional actions that have systematically constrained and disabled our work, including at a time when our newsroom was finalizing preparations for a special election coverage plan in March 2026. During the 2021 national election, our newsroom deployed seven journalists across multiple locations in four regional states to provide live, on-the-ground reporting and bring diverse realities of the electoral process to our audiences. In our April election scenario assessment covering Oromia regional state, Ethiopia’s largest regional state, Addis Standard documented how persistent insecurity over the past eight years had already constrained opposition parties’ ability and willingness to participate in today’s general election.
The assessment noted that the 2021 general election unfolded under conditions shaped by armed conflict and the withdrawal of the region’s two major opposition parties from the electoral process. Both the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) and the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) cited the detention of senior leaders, cadres, and ordinary party members, alongside deteriorating security conditions and the closure of party offices, as key reasons for opting out of participation.
The absence of major opposition actors significantly reshaped the electoral landscape in Oromia, allowing the ruling Prosperity Party to dominate the political field.
According to our assessment, this year’s election presents limited departure from that trajectory. While OLF fielded 163 candidates, OFC registered only six candidates, a move the party described as tactical and aimed at avoiding deregistration by the Election Board.

Since the conflict between the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) and Fano armed groups escalated in 2023, the region has remained shaped by recurring states of conflict and emergency measures.
Large parts of the region, particularly outside major urban centers, have experienced prolonged insecurity marked by continued confrontations between federal forces and Fano fighters. In some areas, this has produced what residents describe as a “dual authority” reality, in which state institutions and armed groups exercise competing forms of influence and control, complicating the notion of a single functioning administrative order.
Against this backdrop, Addis Standard assessed that the central political question facing the region extends beyond electoral participation itself: who ultimately defines political authority and legitimacy in Amhara.

#Iran launches missiles, drones at #US targets in Gulf after strikes near #Hormuz
Addis Abeba- Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (#IRGC) launched missiles and drones targeting US military assets in the Gulf region, including claims of attacks on the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in #Bahrain, an airbase, and other facilities, in retaliation for what Tehran described as US strikes on an Iranian oil tanker and communications infrastructure near the Strait of Hormuz, according to Al Jazeera.
The retaliatory attacks also included missiles and drones fired toward US bases and allied facilities in #Bahrain and #Kuwait. Reuters reported that most of the projectiles were intercepted or failed to reach their targets, with air defense systems activated in Kuwait and the US military assisting in regional defenses. Addis Abeba- Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (#IRGC) launched missiles and drones targeting US military assets in the Gulf region, including claims of attacks on the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in #Bahrain, an airbase, and other facilities, in retaliation for what Tehran described as US strikes on an Iranian oil tanker and communications infrastructure near the Strait of Hormuz, according to Al Jazeera.
The retaliatory attacks also included missiles and drones fired toward US bases and allied facilities in #Bahrain and #Kuwait. Addis Abeba – The Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, held unannounced talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara on Tuesday.
Burhan arrived in Turkey earlier in the day, although his departure from Sudan had not been publicly announced in advance by state media, according to Sudan Tribune.
In a brief statement, President Erdoğan’s office stated that “Türkiye continues its efforts to end the bloodshed in Sudan.” The leaders also discussed regional issues, “with a particular focus on the Türkiye–Sudan bilateral relations.”
Similarly, the Sovereign Council’s media office confirmed the meeting, saying it took place within the framework of strengthening bilateral relations between Sudan and Türkiye.
