News: #USAID Inspector General warns of ‘ongoing fraud schemes’ targeting #food_aid beneficiaries in central, northwestern #Ethiopia

The USAID Office of Inspector General (OIG) has warned of “ongoing fraud schemes targeting beneficiaries of U.S.-funded humanitarian programs in central and northwestern Ethiopia”, including allegations that vulnerable people were solicited for kickbacks during aid registration processes.

“OIG received numerous reports that community leaders abuse their authority to extort payments from beneficiaries,” the report said, adding that in some cases payments were falsely presented as contributions to “political or holiday funds.”

The new alert echoes earlier investigations that uncovered widespread diversion of donor-funded food aid across Ethiopia.

The renewed warning comes as Ethiopia continues to face significant humanitarian pressures driven by conflict, drought, and economic hardship.

#Israel plans new foothold on the Red Sea to fight the #Houthis

While the #Iran war rages, Israel is quietly planning for a potential base at the mouth of the #Red_Sea from which to strike one of the Islamic Republic's last proxies still operating at full strength: the Houthis of #Yemen.

That’s thanks to #Somaliland, the breakaway territory on the Gulf of Aden that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government recognized in December — a move that handed Israel its first diplomatic presence across from Yemen.

Now, the Jewish state will follow up with a strategic security partnership that may involve Israel building a base – possibly covert – on its pristine coast, despite widespread regional criticism, according to Khadar Hussein Abdi, Somaliland’s minister of the presidency.

“In terms of security, we will have a strategic relationship and that encompasses a lot of things,” Abdi....

News: Simret withdraws lawsuit challenging #NEBE decision on five #Tigray constituencies; Getachew Reda says dispute requires political resolution

The Tigray Democratic Solidarity (#Simret) party has withdrawn its lawsuit challenging a decision by the National Election Board of #Ethiopia (NEBE) concerning five electoral constituencies in Tigray, party leader #Getachew_Reda confirmed to Addis Standard today.

Getachew, who is also Advisor to the Ethiopian Pm, said the party submitted a formal request to the Federal High Court seeking to discontinue the case, arguing that documents presented during earlier proceedings showed that what had been described as a decision of the House of Federation did not constitute a formal institutional ruling made through constitutional procedures.

According to him, the document produced in court indicated that the matter reflected the position of officials rather than a decision adopted through the House’s legally required……

News: Finance Minister calls for nationwide #fuel conservation as gov’t considers further restrictions

#Ethiopia’s Finance Minister, #Ahmed_Shide, has urged consumers across the country to use fuel “with high conservation,” warning that additional measures aimed at curbing fuel consumption are currently under study.

The call came as the Ministry of Finance announced a new adjustment to domestic #petroleum prices, increasing fuel costs by up to 10 Birr per liter while warning that legal action has begun against entities accused of selling subsidized fuel above government-mandated prices.

In a briefing to journalists, Ahmed said the government is reminding all fuel users to exercise strict conservation. “We want to remind all fuel users that they must use fuel with high conservation,” he said, adding that additional measures currently under review will be announced to the public in the near future.

According to the ministry, the revised prices ……

#Ethiopia: Residents say over 80 houses burned in attack by government security forces in #Metekel Zone

Residents told Addis Standard that regional special police and district militias have forcibly displaced residents from several kebeles in #Dibate District, #Metekel Zone of the #Benishangul-Gumuz Region, and burned their homes and property.

A resident of Chati Kebele in Dibate District, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said that about a month ago government officials issued an order stating that residents must vacate the area because authorities wanted to “take action against the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA),” which the government refers to as “Shene.”

The resident further alleged that about a month after the displacement, Gumuz Special Police and militias from the Bole area of Bulla District conducted what they described as a “search operation.”

Another displaced resident from the #Chokorsa area of #Gipo Kebele, a father of six, said it……..

#South_Africa deploys soldiers to the streets to tackle organized and violent crime

Soldiers were deployed to the streets of South Africa’s biggest city Wednesday in an effort to help police fight gang violence and illegal mining.

It was the first major deployment since President Cyril #Ramaphosa said in his annual speech to the nation last month that he would use the army against organized crime, which he called the greatest threat to democracy and the country’s economic development.

Soldiers jumped from vehicles and entered apartment blocks as military vehicles moved through the #Riverlea and #Westbury suburbs of #Johannesburg.

Many residents of Riverlea expressed relief to see soldiers deployed to stem the violence.

One resident, Pearl Hilma, told The Associated Press that she supports the crackdown “because there’s lots of gangsterism as well as gunshots every night” in the neighborhood......

#Somali tuk-tuk drivers protest fuel hikes since war

Hundreds of #tuk-tuk drivers blocked a main road in the Somali capital #Mogadishu on Wednesday to protest increased fuel prices caused by the war in the #Middle_East.

Petrol prices have doubled in the city from around $0.60 to $1.25 since the United States and Israel launched air strikes on Iran on February 28.

Like many oil-importing countries, Somalia is feeling the effects of surging global oil prices as Iran's retaliatory strikes have targeted its Gulf neighbours and shipping through the vital Strait of Hormuz.

"The federal government must intervene in this matter. We are facing livelihood problems as the prices of fuel are increasing every day," Ali Yare, one of the tuk-tuk drivers, told AFP.

"The merchants are increasing the prices to take advantage of the conflict in the Middle East, and they have no regard for others'......

#Op_ed: Aggression as Norm: How #America’s triad of hegemony destabilizes global order, redefines sovereignty

In this op-ed, Hassen Mama Muse contends that the February 2026 strikes on #Iran and the arrest of Nicolás Maduro signal a new era where “the immediate security and economic imperatives of the American unipole override established global norms.”

He views this as the culmination of a century long strategy of U.S. primacy exerted through diplomacy, military force, and covert influence. Beyond power projection, #Washington uses “weaponized interdependence”—leveraging economic and financial networks to shape peripheral states.

To counter this, Hassen urges the Global South to pursue a “Multiplex World” focused on economic autonomy and “Decentred Globalism,” prioritizing regional hubs and horizontal partnerships instead of superpower dominance.

News: #Rehabilitation Commission claims hundreds ‘Army 70’ fighters join DDR; #Tigray security bureau pushes back

#Ethiopia’s National Rehabilitation Commission said more than 500 former fighters “linked to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front’s” so-called “Army 70,” previously stationed near the #Sudanese border, have “entered” the government’s Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration program (#DDR) at a temporary processing center in #Awash_Arba.

The claim was met with pushback from the Tigray Security Bureau, which disputed the commission’s characterization of the fighters and their entry into the DDR process. The Bureau called the news “misleading” and said it was made “without the knowledge” of its Tigray office.

In a statement, the bureau described the Commission’s claim as “a sour joke” and accused the federal government of bypassing the legal signatories of the Pretoria Peace Agreement by engaging fighters individually to join the DDR process....

The President acknowledged that this year’s remembrance comes at a precarious time. He described the current atmosphere not as one of comfort, but as one defined by "heavy political tension."

"We are carefully nurturing the relative peace we have in our hands," President Tadesse stated. "However, there are circumstances where forces beyond your capacity emerge, forcing you to make decisions you would not otherwise choose."

Mulugeta Bekele: the jailed and tortured scientist who kept #Ethiopian #physics alive

Mulugeta Bekele paid a heavy price for remaining in #Ethiopia in the 1970s and 1980s. While many other academics had fled their homeland to avoid being targeted by its military rulers, Mulugeta did not.

He stayed to teach #physics, almost single-handedly keeping it alive in the country. But Mulugeta was arrested and brutally tortured by members of the #Derg, Ethiopia’s ruling military junta. “I still have scars,” he says when we meet at his tiny, second-floor office at Addis Ababa University (AAU) in January 2026.

Gentle and softly spoken, Mulugeta, 79, is formally retired but still active as a research physicist. In 2012 his efforts led to him being awarded the Sakharov prize by the American Physical Society (APS) “for his tireless efforts in defence of human rights and freedom of expression and education....
