Emergency teams continued search and rescue operations in several parts of the city and surrounding areas.

Police said fatalities were reported in multiple counties as torrential rains battered large parts of the country over the weekend, flooding roads and disrupting transport and daily activities in several towns.

#Commentary: #Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission: Monolingual mediator in multilingual country

Established in 2021, the National Dialogue Commission (#NDC) is tasked with fostering inclusive dialogue, peace, and social cohesion in #Ethiopia. However, Mesfin Wodajo argues the Commission operates in a “de facto monolingual” manner in a country of more than eighty languages. Despite its commitment to inclusivity, he contends its heavy reliance on Amharic risks “alienating” large segments of the population.

Mesfin cautions that “language could constrain or empower participants in such national dialogues" and emphasizes that the absence of a clear translation and interpreting strategy reflects an “age-old ideology of implicit linguistic nationalism.”

He urges the NDC to “adopt a multilingual operational framework” to safeguard linguistic rights and ensure meaningful participation for all.

News: Fears of fresh war drive #Tigrayans to flee north #Ethiopia

Its deep in the night in #Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia’s #Tigray region, but dozens of young men with backpacks and suitcases are searching for a bus to #Addis_Abeba.

"It’s not safe here anymore," said Abel, whose name has been changed to protect his identity. "I saw people die. I don’t want to relive that, I don’t want the war to catch up with me again."

While war sets much of the #Middle_East alight, just across the waters of the #Red_Sea, another conflict is looming in the Horn of Africa.

Federal and Tigrayan forces are once again massing at their shared border in northern Ethiopia.

There are no exact numbers, but hundreds are fleeing Tigray -- a region that was home to around six million.......

He writes, “Under international humanitarian law, these abuses—as well as acts such as the summary execution of civilians and the large-scale forced displacement of populations—constitute war crimes and demand urgent investigation and accountability.”

Ewnetu adds that “international observers have also documented widespread abuses… allegedly committed by both government forces and the Oromo Liberation Army (#OLA).”

He emphasizes, “Documentation alone, however, is not justice,” warning that “history will judge… those who knew of these atrocities and chose silence over action.”
