Islamic militants abduct more than 300 people in northeastern #Nigeria, officials say

Islamic militants attacked a town in northeastern Nigeria on Friday, abducting more than 300 people, including women and children, local officials said.

The attack happened in the town of Ngoshe in #Borno state, according to Bulama Sawa, an official from the #Gwoza area. He told The Associated Press the attack was likely in retaliation for an operation by the military that killed three commanders of the militant #Boko_Haram group.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for Friday’s attack. Nigeria is battling a complex security crisis from different armed groups. The United States has sent troops to the #West_African nation to help advise its military on the fight against insecurity.

Separate attacks this week also took place in the communities of Konduga, Marte, Jakana, and Mainok between Wednesday and early Friday,....

Sissi says #Egypt in ‘state of near-emergency’ as #US-#Israel war with #Iran threatens economy

President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi says his country is in an economic “state of near-emergency” as a result of the Middle East war, warning of runaway inflation.

The Arab world’s most populous nation has not been physically impacted by the US and Israeli war with Iran, which has seen strikes on Egypt’s wealthy Gulf allies and paralysed trade through the vital Strait of Hormuz.

But by the close of business Thursday, the Egyptian pound had fallen to an eight-month low against the US dollar, trading at 50.2 to the USD amid reports of short-term investment outflows.

Egypt’s import-dependent economy has proven highly sensitive to fluctuations in the currency, which has lost two-thirds of its value since 2022.

At a military academy event, Sissi says “the current crisis might have some repercussions on prices.”

The #Nile dam standoff is heating up, and #Israel is caught between allies – analysis

#US President Donald Trump is widely admired in Israel for achieving what no other leader could: bringing home #Gaza hostages and imposing a ceasefire on what seemed to be an endless war.

Now it appears the self-appointed head of the new Board of Peace may be about to challenge the odds again, this time with a planned plunge into the waters of the Nile. In January, Trump formally notified #Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi that the US is renewing efforts to resolve the longstanding dispute between Egypt, joined by #Sudan, on the one hand, and #Ethiopia on the other, over the longest river in the world.

The most noteworthy aspect of the planned mediation is that the US is firmly on Egypt’s side, as it had been in past US mediation, which Ethiopia broke off in 2020. This means that to make a Trumpian “deal,” the president’s instinct may be to try to use .......

#Op_ed: Mirage of Pillar: Why #Djibouti’s ‘rentier’ reality cannot outrun Horn’s maritime pivot

In this rebuttal, Adam Daud Ahmed challenges the portrayal of Djibouti as an unshakeable “pillar of stability,” arguing that current conditions mask a regime prioritizing survival over meaningful reform.

Ahead of the 2026 elections, constitutional maneuvers have cleared the path for a “lifetime presidency,” making the state a high-risk dependency tied to a single leader. With no independent press and widespread censorship, “stability” has become little more than the absence of an audible alternative. High debt and reliance make Djibouti a “leveraged middleman” rather than a reliable partner.

The author concludes that its “Rentier Fortress” prioritizes regime longevity over institutional reform.

Thousands flee #Akobo after #South_Sudan army issues forced evacuation order

Thousands of civilians have fled an opposition stronghold in eastern South Sudan after the army ordered evacuations to clear the way for a military offensive, the latest sign that the country’s fragile peace is unravelling, as fears of a return to all-out civil war haunt the world’s youngest nation.

“The town is now almost empty,” said Nhial Lew, a local humanitarian official. “Women, children and the elderly have left and crossed into Ethiopia.” By Sunday evening, he could hear the conflict closing in. “We are hearing the sound of machine guns....

#Commentary: #Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission: Monolingual mediator in multilingual country

Established in 2021, the National Dialogue Commission (#NDC) is tasked with fostering inclusive dialogue, peace, and social cohesion in #Ethiopia. However, Mesfin Wodajo argues the Commission operates in a “de facto monolingual” manner in a country of more than eighty languages. Despite its commitment to inclusivity, he contends its heavy reliance on Amharic risks “alienating” large segments of the population.

Mesfin cautions that “language could constrain or empower participants in such national dialogues" and emphasizes that the absence of a clear translation and interpreting strategy reflects an “age-old ideology of implicit linguistic nationalism.”

He urges the NDC to “adopt a multilingual operational framework” to safeguard linguistic rights and ensure meaningful participation for all.
