#Ethiopia: Limited cash availability in #Tigray banks affecting aid delivery to displaced people, OCHA official warns

Limited cash availability in banks across Ethiopia’s Tigray Region is affecting the ability of humanitarian organizations to deliver assistance to displaced communities, an official from the #United_Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (#OCHA) has warned.

Lokuju Peter, head of OCHA’s Tigray sub-office, said humanitarian actors are facing operational difficulties linked to limited cash availability in local banks, which has constrained aid organizations’ ability to support internally displaced people (#IDPs).

Peter said the challenge comes at a time when humanitarian actors are also facing reduced assistance from donor countries, further complicating efforts to maintain aid operations in the region.

According to Tigray Television, the remarks were made on 4 March 2026 during a discussion held in Mekelle on the ....

#Op_ed: From #Pretoria Deal to Uncertainty: Why #Ethiopia’s fragile peace nears breaking point

For over two years since the Pretoria agreement, Ethiopia has existed in a state of “accumulated pressure” rather than genuine peace, writes Ahmed Hassen. He argues that #Tigray is trapped at a crossroads, where “what began as a ceasefire has ossified into sustained economic pressure and an administrative holding pattern.”

Hassen explains that the wartime coalition has fractured: #Eritrea has become a rival, and #Amhara forces have turned from federal partners into a volatile insurgent front, creating an “inverted political geometry” in which the federal center reacts rather than leads.

He warns that “the window for de-escalation is closing,” noting that "the coming three months amount to a decisive window" for the nation's stability.

News: Court adjourns case over #NEBE’s decision to conduct election in 5 electoral districts outside #Tigray oversight

The Federal First Instance Court in #Lideta has adjourned a case over NEBE’s decision to conduct election in 5 electoral districts outside Tigray oversight to March 11, Addis Standard learned.

Judge Seble Kinfe, who presided over the session on Wednesday afternoon, reviewed the initial filings and decided to adjourn the proceedings until March 11 to allow the court to hear the objections in full.

The dispute stems from a decision by the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), which on Feb. 23, 2026 announced that five electoral districts, #Humera, Adi-Remets, Korem-Ofla, Tselemti, and Raya Alamata, would participate only in federal elections during the upcoming seventh general elections excluding them from Tigray oversight. The board suspended regional council voting in those areas pending a final territorial ruling by the House of......

#Ethiopia: Tigray health bureau issues urgent appeal warning of imminent #health system collapse amid fuel, medicine shortages

The #Tigray Interim Administration’s Bureau of Health has issued an emergency appeal to humanitarian partners, donors, #UN agencies, #embassies, and global health institutions, warning that the region’s health system faces an imminent operational collapse due to severe fuel shortages, a halt in pharmaceutical supplies, and mounting financial restrictions.

In the appeal dated 05 March 2026, the bureau urged immediate international intervention, stating that millions of civilians’ risk preventable illness and death if lifesaving services cannot resume.

“Immediate intervention is required to prevent avoidable morbidity and mortality among millions of civilians,” the bureau said in the appeal.

The bureau said that health care must remain protected under international law and should not be restricted by political considerations..,,,,

News: #Tigray rebels say #Ethiopian troops preparing for war

Ethiopian federal authorities are preparing "to wage a war against Tigray," a senior official from this northern regional state told AFP on Wednesday, raising fears of a new conflict.

Tigray emerged in 2022 from a two-year war that saw federal forces, backed by militias and the Eritrean army, clash with rebels from the Tigray People's Liberation Front (#TPLF). The TPLF dominated Ethiopian politics for some 30 years before current Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, a non-Tigrayan, took power in 2018.

At least 600,000 people were killed in the conflict, according to estimates from the African Union. A ceasefire held for more than two years, but clashes between federal and Tigrayan forces broke out again in November 2025 and January 2026.

Large numbers of federal troops have for several weeks been massed at the Tigray border, where....

#South_Sudan: “People keep asking me, is help coming?”

Last month, a grandmother, walked for seven days, carrying her month-and-a-few-days-old granddaughter, Nyabhan. Nyaphan Nyang, the grandmother, walked with a sense of urgency, surviving on leaves. She was fleeing from the conflict that had consumed #Walgak #Payam in #Akobo West, #Jonglei State. Besides, the baby was critically ill because of severe malnutrition.

Hunger had become widespread as conflict resurged in Jonglei State in December 2025. Bhan’s father had been killed in the conflict, while her mother and siblings were kidnapped by armed youth. Nyaphan was the baby’s only hope.

She did get her to safety and help. Unfortunately, it was too late. A few days later Nyabhan died.
The baby and the grandmother were among the several displaced people who met with Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC), Tom Fletcher, about a .....

#Ethiopia: OLA fighters accused of gang rape, sexual slavery against women in #Oromia, Amnesty report

#Amnesty International has accused fighters of the Oromo Liberation Army (#OLA) of committing gang rape, sexual slavery, and other abuses against women and girls during the ongoing armed conflict in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, warning that the violations have contributed to mass displacement and long-term trauma for survivors.

In a new briefing titled “No One Came to My Rescue: Gang Rape, Sexual Slavery, and Mass Displacement of Women in Oromia, Ethiopia,” the rights group said it documented 10 cases of sexual violence in the #Sayo and #Anfillo districts of #Kellem_Wallaga zone, areas it described as strongholds of the OLA.

Amnesty said that the conflict between the OLA and Ethiopian government forces — including the #ENDF, Oromia #Special_Police, Oromia regional police, and local militias — meets the threshold of a non-international armed conflict under .....

#National_interest; Grand narrative with a new hobby of sanctioning the media

Regulators sent a chill through the local newsrooms last week when they yanked the registration of #Addis_Standard, one of the country’s most popular online outlets, for allegedly “dissiminating reports that violate media ethics, the #Ethiopian laws and endanger the national interest of the country.”

Despite the regulators' claim, the media outlet contested that the notice was delivered without prior warning. However, the crackdown did not stop there. The Ethiopian Media Authority (#EMA) refused to renew the press cards of three #Reuters correspondents after the wire service reported allegations that Ethiopia’s government allowed the Rapid Support Forces (#RSF), a military force embattled in #Sudan, to use a training facility near...

#Ethiopia’s #PVoC Requirements: TÜV Rheinland Supports Exporters for Smooth Market Access

As Ethiopia continues strengthening its quality infrastructure and import control framework, exporters shipping regulated products to the country are reminded of the importance of complying with the Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) program prior to shipment.

The PVoC program, overseen by the Ethiopian Conformity Assessment Enterprise under the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration (#MoTRI), requires regulated products to undergo conformity assessment procedures before export to Ethiopia.

A Certificate of Conformity (#CoC) must be issued to ensure smooth customs clearance and prevent delays at the port of entry.

For exporters, understanding the applicable certification route, documentation requirements, and product scope is critical to avoiding unnecessary costs, shipment holds, or re-exports.

#Policy_Brief: #Ethiopia’s Maritime Crossroads: Seizing early opportunities or making later concessions

In this policy brief, Gulaid Yusuf Idaan contends Ethiopia's landlocked status is a "structural vulnerability" shaping its economic and security path. Since 1993, he argues, reliance on #Djibouti has created a "structural concentration of risk," adding that for 130 million people, maritime access is key to "long-term strategic autonomy."

The 2024 #Somaliland MoU offered a "first-mover advantage" for a peaceful "two-water strategy" via Berbera. Yet Ethiopia's "floating foreign policy" risks squandering this leverage. "Delay carries cumulative costs" as global powers engage Somaliland.

Idaan underscores the stark choice facing Ethiopia: “early consolidation under favorable conditions” or “later negotiation under inflated pressure.”

News: Authority urges #coffee suppliers to release stocks amid global price decline

The #Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority has urged coffee suppliers to promptly release existing stocks to the market following a recent decline in global coffee prices.

In a statement issued yesterday on developments in the international coffee market and the status of Ethiopia’s coffee sector, the Authority called on suppliers, exporters, and farmers to accelerate the sale of stored coffee and supply it to the central market while prices remain relatively stable.

Director General of the Authority, Adugna Debela, said international coffee prices have fallen from around $4 to approximately $2.80 over the past two months. He added that projections suggesting a further decline to about $2.50 are creating additional pressure on actors in the sector.

Coffee exports have long been one of Ethiopia’s primary sources of foreign currency. Recent reports indicate that the country.....

#Ethiopia: OLA outlines factual error in #Amnesty report; calls for independent investigation

The Oromo Liberation Army (#OLA) has rejected findings of a recent report by Amnesty International accusing its fighters of gang rape and sexual slavery against women in #western_Oromia, alleging that the report contains “serious methodological flaws and factual errors,” and calling for an independent investigation into abuses committed in the region.

In a press release issued on 06 March, the OLA said that while it condemns all forms of gender-based violence and supports efforts to document abuses against civilians, Amnesty’s report titled “No One Came to My Rescue” suffers from investigative shortcomings & fails to conclusively identify the perpetrators of the crimes described.

The armed group argued that Amnesty itself acknowledged in the report that it could not verify the identities of the alleged perpetrators at the time of publication, a point the OLA said..

#African experts meet in #Rwanda for continental textile standardization

African experts have convened in the Rwandan capital #Kigali for the Technical Committee (#TC 53) meeting on the standardization of textiles, textile products, and accessories.

The forum, which ran from Tuesday to Friday, focused on finalizing agreements and establishing key standards and labeling systems for the textile sector, with the aim of strengthening trade and supporting economic growth within the continent's textile industry.

Hermogene Nsengimana, secretary general of the African Organisation for Standardization (#ARSO), highlighted that Africa still faces a significant gap in developing common quality standards.

He added that currently, only about 25 percent of the standards required for all products in the African common market have been established.

Nsengimana said that ARSO has set a target to significantly reduce this gap within the......

Islamic militants abduct more than 300 people in northeastern #Nigeria, officials say

Islamic militants attacked a town in northeastern Nigeria on Friday, abducting more than 300 people, including women and children, local officials said.

The attack happened in the town of Ngoshe in #Borno state, according to Bulama Sawa, an official from the #Gwoza area. He told The Associated Press the attack was likely in retaliation for an operation by the military that killed three commanders of the militant #Boko_Haram group.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for Friday’s attack. Nigeria is battling a complex security crisis from different armed groups. The United States has sent troops to the #West_African nation to help advise its military on the fight against insecurity.

Separate attacks this week also took place in the communities of Konduga, Marte, Jakana, and Mainok between Wednesday and early Friday,....

Sissi says #Egypt in ‘state of near-emergency’ as #US-#Israel war with #Iran threatens economy

President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi says his country is in an economic “state of near-emergency” as a result of the Middle East war, warning of runaway inflation.

The Arab world’s most populous nation has not been physically impacted by the US and Israeli war with Iran, which has seen strikes on Egypt’s wealthy Gulf allies and paralysed trade through the vital Strait of Hormuz.

But by the close of business Thursday, the Egyptian pound had fallen to an eight-month low against the US dollar, trading at 50.2 to the USD amid reports of short-term investment outflows.

Egypt’s import-dependent economy has proven highly sensitive to fluctuations in the currency, which has lost two-thirds of its value since 2022.

At a military academy event, Sissi says “the current crisis might have some repercussions on prices.”
