Memorial park honoring prominent #Somali anti-colonial leader Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan inaugurated in #Jigjiga

A new memorial park honoring Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, the early 20th century Somali scholar, poet and anti-colonial military leader, has been officially inaugurated in Jigjiga, capital of #Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State.

Known in Somali as Maxamed Cabdulle Xasan, Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan is know to have founded and led the Dervish movement, which waged armed resistance against #British, #Italian and Ethiopian colonial expansion in the Somali Peninsula.

While widely revered by many Somalis as a symbol of anti-colonial struggle, he was pejoratively labeled the “Mad Mullah” by the British Empire. In 1917, the Ottoman Empire recognized him as the “Emir of the Somali People.”

Regional President Mustafa Muhummed presided over the ribbon-.....

#Sudan warns of rising disease rates as war hampers health response

Sudan’s health ministry on Tuesday reported a surge in cases of dengue fever, malaria, and measles across several states, as officials struggle to contain outbreaks amid a collapsing #healthcare system and ongoing conflict.

Health services in Sudan have faced severe disruption since the war began. Logistics have been crippled by fighting and road closures, preventing the delivery of life-saving medicines and medical supplies.

Public health surveillance and prevention programs have also deteriorated as the number of internally displaced people climbs, overwhelming hospitals in affected regions.

The Federal Ministry of Health’s Emergency Operations Centre said in a statement that cumulative dengue fever infections have reached 6,976, including five deaths, representing an increase over the same period last year.....

#UK to end study visas for #Sudan, #Cameroon, Myanmar, Afghanistan students

The United Kingdom says it will end study visas for students from #Afghanistan, Cameroon, #Myanmar and Sudan, and work visas for Afghans, amid a rise in anti-immigration sentiment in the country.

The UK Home Office said in a statement on Tuesday that “an ’emergency brake’ on visas has been imposed for the first time on nationals from four countries”, following a surge in asylum claims by students on study visas.

The Home Office said the number of asylum applications by students from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan had “rocketed” by more than 470 percent between 2021 and 2025.

“Britain will always provide refuge to people fleeing war and persecution, but our visa system must not be abused,” Secretary of State for the Home Department Shabana Mahmood said.

“That is why I am taking the unprecedented......

Goodbye officer, hello touchscreen - a vision for policing in #Ethiopia

Computer tablet screens glow inside a row of partitioned booths at this new-style Ethiopian #police_station. There is no commotion. There is no front desk, no bench of anxiously waiting civilians, no officer calling out names.

This pilot project of what is being called a "smart" - or unmanned - police station in the Bole district of the capital, Addis Ababa, is the latest chapter in Ethiopia's bid to catch up with the digital revolution. A large monitor on the wall cycles through welcome messages as well as images of Prime Minister #Abiy_Ahmed.

But at the moment there are uniformed officers standing by to demonstrate how the system works - it makes the place feels more like a tech showroom. Recently opened, the staff "are here to help people get used to it", the police's head of technology expansion department.....

Four children killed in #Djibouti 'drone strike' explosion: official, NGO

Four children were killed in southern Djibouti in an explosion, authorities said late Tuesday, with a human rights group saying it was a drone strike.

The children died in an explosion in the #Dhikil region in #Afar, public prosecutor Hassan Mohamed Hassan said in a statement, calling it a tragic event.

Afar's community feels marginalised by President Ismail Omar #Guelleh, a member of the majority Issa community, who has ruled the country with an iron fist since 1999.

"Two children, aged six and seven (a girl and a boy), were killed at the scene, and on Tuesday two others succumbed to their injuries due to a lack of evacuation and medical care," the Djiboutian League for Human Rights (#LDDH) said in a press release.

The LDDH said the children were tending livestock when the incident took place and that....

#Commentary: #UAE in Post-2018 #Ethiopia: Strategic depth or ephemeral hovering

Ethiopia’s ties with global powers remain stable, but Mukerrem Miftah argues that “UAE-Ethiopia relations are a different story,” split sharply between pre-2018 and post-2018 eras.

He explains that before 2018, UAE engagement was minimal, but in June 2018, #Abu_Dhabi pledged $6 billion in aid and investments, becoming one of Ethiopia’s top five foreign investors. While the UAE helped facilitate Ethiopia-#Eritrea rapprochement and aligned with Ethiopian interests in #Sudan and the Horn, its broader record remains “contentious."

Mukerrem emphasizes, “The UAE pursues economic and geopolitical goals often at the expense of weaker states,” and calls the alliance less a strategic partnership than a "Faustian bargain with the devil" for a struggling Ethiopia."

Analysis: How #national army battlefield report, #Fano statements in Feb–March lay bare the persistence and intensity of ongoing war in #Amhara region

More than two and a half years after the armed confrontation erupted in #Ethiopia’s Amhara region in April 2023, developments from early 2026 underscore not only the persistence of the war but also its deeply complex nature.

Military briefings issued on 03 March by the Ethiopian National Defense Force (#ENDF), and by the Amhara regional state media outlet on 01 March, both of which came two weeks after a statement released by Amhara Fano National Movement (#AFNM) on 14 February 2026, illustrate a war defined as much by clashing narratives as by sustained fighting on the ground.

The statements also reveal parallel & mutually exclusive interpretations of the same war, each claiming momentum, legitimacy, and popular support, directly contradicting earlier official assurances of imminent victory and casting,.....

News: #PM_Abiy issues stern warning to #Eritrea, says further attempt to harm #Ethiopia “will be the last”

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has issued a stern warning to Eritrea’s ruling establishment, saying Ethiopia “will not give him another chance” to harm its people, saying any such move “will be the last.”

Speaking in Tigrinya with Ethiopia News Agency on Tuesday, the Prime Minister reflected on the #Tigray war and sharply criticized what he described as atrocities and widespread looting committed by Eritrean forces after entering #Tigray.

“We started with good and were pushed back with evil,” Abiy said, acknowledging that while Ethiopia initially appreciated the support of the Eritrean army during the outbreak of the Tigray war, that support “does not cover the evil deeds committed later.”

Abiy detailed crimes committed in several cities across Tigray following the entry of Eritrean troops. He said that at the time, the federal government was engaged in ....

News: Shrinking #press_freedom, civic space undermine free and fair election, group of 41 countries cautions #Ethiopia

A group of 41 countries has expressed concern over what it described as a shrinking civic space and deteriorating press freedom in Ethiopia, cautioning that ongoing restrictions on fundamental rights risk undermining the conduct of free and fair #elections as the country prepares for national polls scheduled for June.

Delivering a joint statement at the #United_Nations Human Rights Council 61st session, the joint statement on the human rights situation in Ethiopia said it welcomed Ethiopia’s “continued engagement” with international human rights mechanisms, including its participation in reviews by the Committee on the Rights of the Child and the fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (#UPR).

#Somalia parliament approves new constitution

Somalia's bicameral #parliament on Wednesday approved the country's new constitution following a protracted process that spanned more than 13 years.

Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur, speaker of the House of the People, the lower house of the Federal Parliament, announced that 186 members of the lower house and 37 #senators from the Upper House voted in favor of the new constitution during a joint session.

"Today is a historic day, worthy of remembrance as our constitution transitions from a provisional one to an official, lawful one," Nur said.

The new constitution will be formally signed into law by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. It replaces the provisional constitution adopted in 2012, when more than 800 delegates adopted it at a conference in Mogadishu while the country was under a transitional government.

"Today marks a defining milestone for Somalia as we fulfill our......

#USCIRF urges designation of #Sudan’s RSF as religious freedom violator

A U.S. government advisory panel has recommended for the first time that the State Department designate Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) as an “entity of particular concern” following severe violations of religious freedom.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (#USCIRF) said in its 2026 annual report that the paramilitary group had carried out systematic and egregious abuses throughout 2025. The recommendation comes as the group continues to exercise significant territorial control amid Sudan’s ongoing civil war.

The commission highlighted a September 2025 drone strike by the RSF that struck a mosque in al-Fasher, killing more than 70 people. Beyond targeted strikes, the report found that RSF fighters have looted or repurposed houses of worship and threatened or displaced religious leaders.

Religious minorities in Sudan have faced heightened vulnerabilities as state....
