News: #Tigray marks Adwa anniversary amid renewed political tensions

Authorities in Tigray have commemorated the 130th anniversary of the historic Battle of #Adwa, framing the occasion not only as a celebration of past triumph but also as a reflection of the region’s current political and territorial challenges.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau described the 1896 victory at Adwa as a defining moment of African resistance and a symbol of resilience deeply rooted in Tigray’s history.

The bureau emphasized the role of Tigrayan forces in late 19th-century battles against Ottoman, Egyptian, Italian and Dervish expansionist campaigns, highlighting the leadership of Ras Alula Abanega in key confrontations at Gundet, Gura and Dogali prior to the decisive defeat of Italian forces at Adwa.

However, this year’s commemoration unfolded against a backdrop of heightened tensions between #Mekelle and #Addis_Abeba......

At least 169 people have been killed and buried in a mass grave in northern South Sudan, two local officials told AFP Monday, as the country sees a dramatic increase in violence.

The latest massacre happened early on Sunday in #Abiemnom County near the #Sudan border. "A total of 169 bodies have been laid to rest in a mass grave," Elizabeth Achol, health minister in northern Ruweng administrative area, told AFP by phone.

Local information minister James Monyluak gave the same toll, saying it included women, children and elderly people and could increase further as more bodies are found.

A diplomatic source, speaking to AFP anonymously, placed the death toll at 70 but said it could rise. The government condemned "the barbaric attack" in a statement, confirming the killing of two senior local officials.

#US sanctions #Rwanda’s military and top officials over support for M23 rebels in Congo

The U.S. imposed sanctions Monday on the Rwandan Defence Forces and four of its senior officials for supporting the March 23 Movement, an armed group responsible for human rights abuses in the central African nation of #Congo.

The latest penalties come after a U.S.-mediated peace agreement was signed in December by Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul #Kagame in #Washington, alongside U.S. President Donald #Trump.

Trump at the time praised the leaders for their courage, as the deal also opened the region’s critical mineral reserves to the U.S. government and U.S. companies.

Despite the agreement, fighting between the two parties continues on several fronts in eastern Congo, claiming numerous civilian and military casualties.

#M23 is the most prominent of about 100 armed factions...

Analysis: #Journalism under pressure: New report documents escalating threats to media freedom in #Ethiopia

A report released in February this year warns that journalists in Ethiopia continue to operate in an increasingly hostile environment marked by physical danger, legal pressure, and expanding digital surveillance, despite years of official reform pledges.

The findings are detailed in the Annual Assessment Report on Journalist Safety in Ethiopia 2025, published by International Media Support (#IMS).

The report describes 2025 as “a worrying period for journalists in Ethiopia,” citing persistent intimidation, detention, and harassment nationwide. At least 44 journalists were abducted or detained during the year, slightly higher than the 43 recorded in 2024, underscoring what the report calls a continuity of attacks against the press.

A central finding of the assessment is the continued reliance on national security .......

#Commentary: Stalled Recovery, Rising Fragility: #Tigray between self-reliance and societal collapse

As forces reportedly mass near #Ethiopia’s Tigray region, fears of renewed war are rising. In this commentary, Duke Burbridge notes, “It’s anyone’s guess whether Tigray will be a target or a staging ground to attack #Eritrea,” but either outcome would devastate civilians still reeling from past atrocities.

After visiting areas from #Mekelle to hard-hit rural districts, he found one constant: “Suffering and despair are endemic.” Most people lack necessities, while reconstruction has barely begun since the 2022 ceasefire. In displacement camps, life is now “harder than it was during the war.”

“Survival has limits,” Burbridge emphasizes, cautioning that if the federal government chooses conflict over rebuilding, it will "eventually lose the war against its people."

A new memorial park honoring Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, the early 20th century Somali scholar, poet and anti-colonial military leader, has been officially inaugurated in Jigjiga, capital of #Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State.

Known in Somali as Maxamed Cabdulle Xasan, Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan is know to have founded and led the Dervish movement, which waged armed resistance against #British, #Italian and Ethiopian colonial expansion in the Somali Peninsula.

While widely revered by many Somalis as a symbol of anti-colonial struggle, he was pejoratively labeled the “Mad Mullah” by the British Empire. In 1917, the Ottoman Empire recognized him as the “Emir of the Somali People.”

#Sudan warns of rising disease rates as war hampers health response

Sudan’s health ministry on Tuesday reported a surge in cases of dengue fever, malaria, and measles across several states, as officials struggle to contain outbreaks amid a collapsing #healthcare system and ongoing conflict.

Public health surveillance and prevention programs have also deteriorated as the number of internally displaced people climbs, overwhelming hospitals in affected regions.

The Federal Ministry of Health’s Emergency Operations Centre said in a statement that cumulative dengue fever infections have reached 6,976, including five deaths, representing an increase over the same period last year.....

The Home Office said the number of asylum applications by students from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan had “rocketed” by more than 470 percent between 2021 and 2025.

“Britain will always provide refuge to people fleeing war and persecution, but our visa system must not be abused,” Secretary of State for the Home Department Shabana Mahmood said.

Goodbye officer, hello touchscreen - a vision for policing in #Ethiopia

Computer tablet screens glow inside a row of partitioned booths at this new-style Ethiopian #police_station. There is no commotion. There is no front desk, no bench of anxiously waiting civilians, no officer calling out names.

This pilot project of what is being called a "smart" - or unmanned - police station in the Bole district of the capital, Addis Ababa, is the latest chapter in Ethiopia's bid to catch up with the digital revolution. A large monitor on the wall cycles through welcome messages as well as images of Prime Minister #Abiy_Ahmed.

But at the moment there are uniformed officers standing by to demonstrate how the system works - it makes the place feels more like a tech showroom. Recently opened, the staff "are here to help people get used to it", the police's head of technology expansion department.....
