News: #Tigray interim President warns current dispute could trigger war, endanger all of #Ethiopia

A peaceful demonstration was held at the Baloni Stadium in #Mekelle city protesting the recent decision by Ethiopia’s House of Federation and the National #Electoral Board of Ethiopia.

Addressing the rally, Lt. Gen. Tadesse Woreda, President of the Tigray Interim Administration, warned that an issue that should be resolved politically must not be allowed to escalate into armed conflict.

Tadesse argued that the matter at hand is fundamentally political rather than legal. “This decision is not merely a matter for the House of Federation, the Ethiopian Election Board, or the law. It is political, & its solution must also be political,” he stated.

Meanwhile, #TPLF chairman Debrestion Gebremichael (PhD) warned against what he described as a plot aimed at permanently disintegrating Tigray, calling on the public to remain united in defending the region’s interests...

The Information Network Security Administration (#INSA) has issued an urgent warning over what it described as a widespread #cyberattack targeting WhatsApp users, with perpetrators exploiting the ongoing seventh general election process.

The campaign is said to target high-ranking government officials, students living abroad, individuals pursuing online education, and influential public figures.

According to the agency, one of the primary tactics involves sending deceptive messages such as “Express your support for our party by clicking this link” or “Join our election campaign team,”

#Ethiopia: Defending media crackdown, senior EMA official berates global press freedom advocates

A senior official at the Ethiopian Media Authority (#EMA) has mounted a strong defense of the regulator’s decision to revoke the operating license of #Addis_Standard, dismissing international criticism as part of a broader campaign that undermines Ethiopia’s sovereignty.

In an opinion piece published on 26 February 2026, Yonatan Tesfaye, Deputy Director General of EMA, described global condemnation of the move — including statements from Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Human Rights Watch, Freedom House, and the Committee to Protect Journalists — as reflective of what he called a “globalist machinery” promoting narratives hostile to Ethiopia’s national interests.

He argued that international observers often disregard the country’s legal framework and security context, including armed insurgencies and what he described as foreign influence in the information .....

#Somaliland appoints envoy to #Israel despite global criticism over recognition

Despite mounting international criticism following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in December, President Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro has appointed an ambassador to #Tel_Aviv.

The self-declared Republic of Somaliland, still internationally recognized as part of #Somalia, has yet to receive an official public response from #Mogadishu regarding the appointment.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in the early 1990s and operates with the hallmarks of statehood, including its own currency, parliament, military, and regular democratic elections.

Israel became the first country to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state, prompting strong objections from Somalia, which...

#Abiy’s vision of #Ethiopia includes a seaport in #Eritrea. Some see a looming conflict

To his supporters, Ethiopia’s prime minister is a renaissance man trying to reimagine the old greatness of his country.

To some others, Abiy Ahmed is a provocateur who could light a fire in the restive Horn of Africa region as he pushes for sovereign access to the sea via an unfriendly neighbor.

In a stadium in southern Ethiopia last Sunday, Abiy staged a provocative parade of Ethiopia’s special forces as they demonstrated maneuvers in a spectacle widely seen as intended for neighboring Eritrea to see. A banner proclaimed Ethiopia would not remain landlocked whether “you like it or not,” with imagery showing a soldier breaking a door while aiming for the port of #Assab.

Assab has been part of Eritrea since 1993, when it broke away from Ethiopia after decades of guerrilla warfare. Most of Ethiopia’s trade goes through...

#Kenya presidential candidate urges revocation of passport for brother of RSF chief

Kenyan presidential candidate and former Chief Justice David #Maraga demanded that the government revoke a passport issued to Algoney Hamdan #Dagalo, the brother of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) commander, calling it a threat to Kenya’s sovereignty and regional neutrality.

Maraga, who leads the United Green Movement party, condemned what he described as a “disturbing” disclosure that official travel documents were issued to Algoney, warning that Kenya’s involvement risks enabling actors in Sudan’s ongoing civil war. He identified the Kenyan passport as bearing the number AK1586127.

Algoney, a #Dubai-based businessman and senior logistics official for the RSF, is currently under sanctions from the #US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control and the #European Union for his role in procuring weapons for the paramilitary group.

#Djibouti leader wary of #Israel’s presence in #Somaliland

Djibouti President Ismail Omar #Guelleh on Friday warned that the establishment of an Israeli military base in the strategic port city of #Berbera in Somaliland will pose a direct threat to regional stability.

Speaking to a local media, Guelleh accused Israel of exploiting Somaliland’s decades-long quest for statehood to secure a foothold in the Horn of Africa.

He expressed deep concern that the authorities in #Hargeisa might agree to any geopolitical concession in exchange for formal recognition.

The veteran leader also leveled uncharacteristically blunt criticism at the United Arab Emirates, describing the Gulf nation as Israel’s primary “gateway” into the region.

Guelleh pointed out that the #UAE is driving strategic shifts in the Horn of Africa and the #Red_Sea that exacerbate existing conflicts. He further alleged....
