News: #Ethiopian Media Authority revokes Addis Standard’s online media registration; Editor-in-Chief disputes claims
The Ethiopian Media Authority (#EMA) has announced the revocation of the online media registration certificate of #Addis_Standard, effective 24 February 2026, citing repeated violations of media ethics, national laws, and what it described as the country’s national interests.
The statement did not specify which reports or actions formed the basis of the decision.
Responding to the EMA’s announcement, Yonas Kedir, Editor-in-Chief of Addis Standard publications, rejected the Authority’s claims, saying the outlet had never received any formal notices of violations.
“The claim that Addis Standard received repeated notices is factually incorrect. At no point has the Ethiopian Media Authority formally notified Addis Standard newsroom of any prior violations or enforcement actions,” he said. He added that the publisher, #JAKENN Publishing PLC, ..…

#Ethiopia revokes Addis Standard’s license amid escalating crackdown on independent media
The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on Ethiopian authorities to immediately restore the registration of independent outlet Addis Standard after the Ethiopian Media Authority (#EMA) revoked its online media registration certificate effective February 24.
“This is not regulation — it is retaliation,” said #CPJ Africa Director Angela Quintal. “By weaponizing vague‘national interest’ and ‘media ethics’ provisions, the Ethiopian Media Authority is silencing independent journalism. Revoking Addis Standard’s license is part of a deliberate campaign to dismantle critical reporting in Ethiopia. Authorities must immediately reinstate the outlet’s registration and end their escalating assault on the press.”

According to a statement posted on Facebook by the Ethiopian Media Authority (#EMA), whose director is appointed by the lower house of parliament, Addis Standard "has been repeatedly disseminating reports that violate media ethics, Ethiopian laws, and endanger the national interests of the country and its people".

News: Publisher challenges #EMA’s revocation of Addis Standard registration, cites due process violations
#JAKENN Publishing P.L.C., the publisher of #Addis_Standard, has formally contested the decision by the #Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) to revoke the outlet’s online media registration certificate, arguing that the move lacks legal basis and violates due process guarantees under Ethiopian law.
The response follows an announcement circulated on the Authority’s official social media channels on 24 February 2026, stating that Addis Standard’s registration had been revoked.
In a letter addressed to the EMA Board of Directors, JAKENN said a legal review found the announcement “exceeds the Authority’s procedural powers” and is incompatible with safeguards provided under Media Proclamation No. 1238/2021, as amended by Proclamation No. 1374/2025.

Explainer from #Addis_Standard Newsroom:
As of 24 February, Addis Standard has not received any formal written notice, legally mandated opportunity to respond, or reasoned decision preceding the #Ethiopian Media Authority’s public claim, made via social media, that our online media registration was revoked.
Ethiopian media law is clear: suspension or revocation of a media license must follow a defined process, including written notice, a 14-working-day right of response, a reasoned decision, and access to appeal before the Authority’s Board of Directors.
None of these mandatory steps have been observed. Addis Standard remains fully operational and continues its public-interest journalism in good faith, while its publisher, #JAKENN Publishing PLC, pursues clarification and rectification through lawful channels. This matter goes beyond one newsroom, it concerns whether media regulation in Ethiopia is governed by law, due process, and institutional accountability.

#Op_ed: Independence Veiled by Dictatorship: Isaias Afwerki’s #Eritrea on familiar autocratic path
In this op-ed, Abdirezak Sahane Elmi argues that many liberation movements eventually mirror the autocracies they overthrew. He notes that from #Libya to #Syria, leaders who dismantled unjust orders ultimately "subordinated national interests to regime survival," resulting in social fragmentation.
Elmi contends that Eritrea’s Isaias Afwerki follows this path, maintaining power through "engineered poverty." He warns that "the core danger of autocratic rule is not merely repression, but the way it reshapes political culture into one that prioritizes the survival of a leader over the survival of a nation."
The author underscores, "Liberation without institutional restraint and democratic governance does not safeguard freedom; it merely postpones the moment when power turns inward."

Will #Ethiopia be part of #Israel’s ‘hexagon’ alliance rivalling its enemies?
Days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu proposed forging a network of allied nations, including in the #Middle_East and #Africa, to stand against what he called “radical” adversaries, the country’s president is on an official visit to key ally, Ethiopia.
It is not yet known which Arab and African countries will form part of Netanyahu’s hypothetical “#hexagon of alliances”, which he said on Sunday will include Israel, #India, #Greece, #Cyprus and others to stand against their enemies in the Middle East.
Chief among those enemies is presumably #Iran and its network of resistance groups from #Hezbollah in #Lebanon to the #Houthis of #Yemen. Analysts doubt Israel could secure enough influence over nation-states to form a formal security pact.
However, the country is deepening its ongoing charm....

News: #Egypt denies report linking Red Sea access to #GERD flexibility
Egypt has categorically denied claims that it offered to help #Ethiopia secure access to the #Red_Sea in exchange for flexibility over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), according to Al-Ahram.
Citing a responsible Egyptian source, the newspaper said on Tuesday that reports suggesting Cairo was prepared to grant Ethiopia maritime access were “entirely unfounded” and had no basis in fact. The source reaffirmed that Egypt’s position on water security and the GERD “remains firm and unchanged.”
The denial follows a report by The National, which cited unnamed sources in Cairo as saying Egypt had conveyed a proposal to Prime Minister #Abiy Ahmed last week.
“No other states have the right to participate in any arrangements or understandings concerning the Red Sea,” the source added.

Press Freedom under pressure in #Ethiopia
Citing a letter from the Ethiopian Media Authority announcing the suspension of Addis Standard’s registration certificate, Muthoki Mumo, Africa Program Coordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists, warned of a “drastic deterioration of press freedom in Ethiopia, one that “belies the hopes many had when Abiy Ahmed became prime minister.”
Mumo was speaking at the Africa Editors’ Forum, held during this year’s Africa Media Festival in Nairobi, which is taking place from 25–26 February under the theme “Resilient Storytelling: Reimagining Media Freedom.”
Earlier this week, CPJ urged Ethiopian authorities to immediately restore Addis Standard’s registration after the regulator revoked its online media license effective February 24. “This is not regulation, it is retaliation,” said Angela Quintal, accusing authorities of weaponizing vague legal provisions to silence independent journalism.

One-third of #Somalis to face hunger in March: #UN officials
Some 6.5 million people, or about a third of Somalia's population, will face crisis levels of hunger through March, an increase of 1.7 million since January, UN officials warned.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday at the UN headquarters via video link, World Food Programme (#WFP) Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response Ross Smith said the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (#IPC) report for Somalia, released on Tuesday, confirmed fears that the humanitarian situation in Somalia has significantly worsened.
"Of these, two million of the most vulnerable women and children are expected to face severe hunger," with over 1.8 million children under the age of 5 to face acute malnutrition in 2026, he said.

#UN sanctions 4 commanders in #Sudan’s paramilitary force accused of atrocities in #Darfur
The U.N. Security Council imposed sanctions on four commanders of Sudan’s warring paramilitary force suspected of atrocities against civilians that U.N. experts said showed “hallmarks of genocide.”
The four commanders in the Rapid Support Forces, which have been at war with the Sudanese military since 2023, were added to the blacklist for their activities in el-Fasher, especially on Oct. 26, the day the paramilitary force took over the North Darfur capital.
The United Kingdom imposed sanctions on the four commanders in December, and Tuesday’s designations follow a report last week by U.N.-backed human rights experts. #Commentary: The New Scramble for Horn of #Africa: Global powers’ expanding footprint; #Ethiopia’s maritime ambition
This commentary argues that the 39th #AU Summit met at a volatile moment when Africa’s development goals collided with a “fracturing global order.” Though officially focused on water, it was overshadowed by “catastrophic instability” in #Sudan and #Gaza, reflecting the “Coming Global Turn.”
The piece describes the Horn as a “cauldron of contradictions,” where a “new scramble” is unfolding and “strategic utility often outweighs legal status.” Meanwhile, Ethiopia, trapped in a “geographic prison,” views the #Red_Sea as a “structural condition for national growth,” urging “peaceful choreography” over coercion.
Without regional unity, the piece cautions, the Horn risks remaining a “peninsula of peril” driven by “foreign strategic whims.”

News: #HRW condemns #EMA decision to revoke Addis Standard license, says move reflects growing repression of press freedom in Ethiopia
The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has condemned the #Ethiopian government’s decision to revoke the operating license of Addis Standard, warning that the move risks silencing one of the country’s last independent media institutions ahead of national elections.
On 24 February, the Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) announced that it had revoked the outlet’s operating license, three months before scheduled national polls. HRW said the measure reflects what it described as authorities’ renewed reliance on “the authoritarian playbook.”
Founded in 2011, Addis Standard has been a prominent independent voice in what rights groups describe as an increasingly restrictive media environment, publishing in-depth reporting on politically sensitive issues. HRW noted that the outlet and its staff have faced repeated pressure over the years....
