The world is becoming too hot for #coffee: the reason for the catastrophic rise in prices

In just two years, the cost of #Robusta and #Arabica beans has almost doubled

Just five countries account for about 75% of global coffee production. However, the annual number of hot days there has already increased by an average of 57, so it is unclear how much longer the plants will be able to withstand it.

According to The Guardian, global warming is making coffee cultivation increasingly difficult.

Temperatures unbearable for plants

#Ethiopia is traditionally considered the birthplace of coffee. This plant provides the main income for more than 4 million households and a third of the country's export earnings.

The "coffee belt" in Ethiopia is located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. For plants to bear fruit effectively, they need a certain temperature regime...

News: #Egypt signals support for #Ethiopia’s Red Sea access if Nile dispute eases – report

Egypt is prepared to work with #African partners to help secure Ethiopia access to the #Red_Sea if #Addis_Abeba shows flexibility in the long-running dispute over #Nile waters, according to a report by The National citing sources in Cairo familiar with private deliberations.

The Abu Dhabi-based newspaper reported that the proposal was conveyed to Prime Minister #Abiy_Ahmed last week and has also been shared with #Washington, where #US President Donald #Trump has publicly expressed interest in mediating the decade-old dispute over Egypt’s share of Nile waters following Ethiopia’s construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (#GERD).

According to the report, the Egyptian offer includes an implicit warning that Cairo could use its political and military influence in #Sudan, #Somalia and #Djibouti, as well as its naval presence in the southern Red Sea, to restrict....

#Ugandan president's son compares #Sudan's RSF to Hitler following meeting with his father

The son of Ugandan President Yoweri #Museveni and chief of the country’s armed forces has launched an extraordinary attack on the leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) paramilitary, who recently met with his father in Uganda.

“Hemedti is a criminal,” Muhoozi Kainerugaba tweeted on Sunday night, referring to RSF chief Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. “He has the blood of thousands of black people on his hands.

“RSF feels like heroes for killing innocent black people. Very good. I bet Hitler felt like a hero too for gassing Jews in Auschwitz,” he posted.

Kainerugaba, who is the head of the Uganda People’s Defence Force and is widely expected to take over from his father as president when Museveni dies, wrote that the “RSF will have to fight the whole of Black Africa before they win in Sudan. .....

News: #NAMA, #ADPM welcome House of Federation decision to hold elections in five districts outside #Tigray oversight

The National Movement of #Amhara (NAMA) and the Amhara Democratic Force Movement (ADPM) have welcomed a recent decision by the House of #Federation to conduct elections in five districts outside the oversight of the Tigray regional authorities, pending the resolution of their constitutional status.

In separate statements issued following emergency executive meetings, both organisations said the decision provides a legal response to long-standing questions of political participation and identity in the “contested” electoral districts, while also raising concerns about its implementation.

NAMA said it respects the decision, which followed communication between the House of Federation and #NEBE, & described it as consistent with the spirit of the Pretoria Agreement.

For its part, ADPM described the House’s move as “the beginning of historical....

#Commentary: From #Derg to #EPRDF to Present: #Ethiopia’s unfinished nation-state-building journey

In this commentary, Merera Gudina traces Ethiopia’s persistent instability to failed state-building across the imperial, Derg, and EPRDF eras. He argues each collapse stemmed from rulers prioritizing personal power over the "equality of Ethiopian peoples" and their "thirst for development."

Merera recounts how Emperor Haile Selassie’s 60-year reign ended ignominiously, even as hundreds of thousands perished in #Wollo, while the Derg, despite abolishing feudal landholding, succumbed to an "extreme lust for power," enforcing Stalinist "#Red_Terror" and destroying movements. The EPRDF era, meant to resolve the "nationalities question," became a 27-year "crude joke."

Today, Ethiopia faces a "final frontier," requiring an end to "political theater" and "sham elections" for genuine unity.

News: Armed #Tigrai Peace Force converge with Interim Admin in rejecting House of #Federation decision

An unusual alignment is emerging among rival Tigrayan actors after the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (#NEBE) issued a decision, in line with a ruling by the House of Federation, concerning five electoral districts previously under the Tigray regional state ahead of the 7th General Elections.

The Tigrai Peace Force, an armed group that has positioned itself in opposition to both the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (#TPLF) and the current Tigray Interim Administration, released a statement through its Military Council strongly rejecting the electoral board’s decision. On the same day, the Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau, representing the Interim Administration, issued a separate statement condemning the move as unconstitutional.

Despite deep political and military divisions between them, these & other political actors adopted strikingly similar...

News: #Ethiopia rules out immediate full liberalisation of #aviation market – report

Ethiopia has ruled out an immediate full opening of its aviation market to foreign private airlines, signalling a strategic focus on strengthening domestic operators before exposing them to global competition, according to a report by Business Insider Africa.

Citing remarks delivered at a sector meeting held on Monday, 23 February 2026, the outlet reported that Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority Director General Yohannes Abera said the country must first reinforce its aviation ecosystem, legal structures, and financing frameworks before considering liberalisation.

“The broader aviation ecosystem and legal and financing frameworks must be strengthened before any liberalisation is considered,” Abera was quoted as saying, warning that domestic operators currently lack the institutional depth to compete independently on the global stage.

The report said the policy stance ..…

News: CPJ urges fair, transparent trials for four #Ethiopian journalists facing terrorism charges

The Committee to Protect Journalists (#CPJ) has called on Ethiopian authorities to ensure fair and transparent trials for four journalists who face potential death sentences or life imprisonment on terrorism charges.

In a statement issued today, 24 February 2026, CPJ urged due process protections for Gobeze Sisay, Meskerem Abera, Genet Asmamaw, and Dawit Begashaw, who have been in detention for nearly three years over their reporting on unrest in the Amhara region.

Gobeze Sisay of The Voice of Amhara was arrested in May 2023 in Djibouti and transferred under unclear circumstances to Ethiopia.

The four are expected to present their defense in May after a federal court ruled on February 4 that prosecutors had presented sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial.....

News: #Ethiopian Media Authority revokes Addis Standard’s online media registration; Editor-in-Chief disputes claims

The Ethiopian Media Authority (#EMA) has announced the revocation of the online media registration certificate of #Addis_Standard, effective 24 February 2026, citing repeated violations of media ethics, national laws, and what it described as the country’s national interests.

The statement did not specify which reports or actions formed the basis of the decision.

Responding to the EMA’s announcement, Yonas Kedir, Editor-in-Chief of Addis Standard publications, rejected the Authority’s claims, saying the outlet had never received any formal notices of violations.

“The claim that Addis Standard received repeated notices is factually incorrect. At no point has the Ethiopian Media Authority formally notified Addis Standard newsroom of any prior violations or enforcement actions,” he said. He added that the publisher, #JAKENN Publishing PLC, ..…

#Ethiopia revokes Addis Standard’s license amid escalating crackdown on independent media

The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on Ethiopian authorities to immediately restore the registration of independent outlet Addis Standard after the Ethiopian Media Authority (#EMA) revoked its online media registration certificate effective February 24.

“This is not regulation — it is retaliation,” said #CPJ Africa Director Angela Quintal. “By weaponizing vague‘national interest’ and ‘media ethics’ provisions, the Ethiopian Media Authority is silencing independent journalism. Revoking Addis Standard’s license is part of a deliberate campaign to dismantle critical reporting in Ethiopia. Authorities must immediately reinstate the outlet’s registration and end their escalating assault on the press.”

In a February 24 statement, the EMA accused Addis Standard of “repeatedly disseminating .....

News: #Ethiopia revokes independent news outlet Addis Standard's license

Ethiopia on Tuesday revoked the licence of independent online outlet Addis Standard saying it harmed national interests, in the latest curb on press freedom.

Africa's second most populous nation with around 130 million inhabitants ranks 145th out of 180 in the press freedom index compiled by Reporters Without Borders (#RSF).

According to a statement posted on Facebook by the Ethiopian Media Authority (#EMA), whose director is appointed by the lower house of parliament, Addis Standard "has been repeatedly disseminating reports that violate media ethics, Ethiopian laws, and endanger the national interests of the country and its people".

It said Addis Standard had ignored several warnings "to correct its course & refrain from its detrimental practices".

"Therefore... the registration certificate of Addis Standard...

News: Publisher challenges #EMA’s revocation of Addis Standard registration, cites due process violations

#JAKENN Publishing P.L.C., the publisher of #Addis_Standard, has formally contested the decision by the #Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) to revoke the outlet’s online media registration certificate, arguing that the move lacks legal basis and violates due process guarantees under Ethiopian law.

The response follows an announcement circulated on the Authority’s official social media channels on 24 February 2026, stating that Addis Standard’s registration had been revoked.

In a letter addressed to the EMA Board of Directors, JAKENN said a legal review found the announcement “exceeds the Authority’s procedural powers” and is incompatible with safeguards provided under Media Proclamation No. 1238/2021, as amended by Proclamation No. 1374/2025.

The publisher stressed that Addis Standard is operated by JAKENN Publishing P.L.C., a legally registered private....

Explainer from #Addis_Standard Newsroom:

As of 24 February, Addis Standard has not received any formal written notice, legally mandated opportunity to respond, or reasoned decision preceding the #Ethiopian Media Authority’s public claim, made via social media, that our online media registration was revoked.

Ethiopian media law is clear: suspension or revocation of a media license must follow a defined process, including written notice, a 14-working-day right of response, a reasoned decision, and access to appeal before the Authority’s Board of Directors.

None of these mandatory steps have been observed. Addis Standard remains fully operational and continues its public-interest journalism in good faith, while its publisher, #JAKENN Publishing PLC, pursues clarification and rectification through lawful channels. This matter goes beyond one newsroom, it concerns whether media regulation in Ethiopia is governed by law, due process, and institutional accountability.

#Op_ed: Independence Veiled by Dictatorship: Isaias Afwerki’s #Eritrea on familiar autocratic path

In this op-ed, Abdirezak Sahane Elmi argues that many liberation movements eventually mirror the autocracies they overthrew. He notes that from #Libya to #Syria, leaders who dismantled unjust orders ultimately "subordinated national interests to regime survival," resulting in social fragmentation.

Elmi contends that Eritrea’s Isaias Afwerki follows this path, maintaining power through "engineered poverty." He warns that "the core danger of autocratic rule is not merely repression, but the way it reshapes political culture into one that prioritizes the survival of a leader over the survival of a nation."

The author underscores, "Liberation without institutional restraint and democratic governance does not safeguard freedom; it merely postpones the moment when power turns inward."

Will #Ethiopia be part of #Israel’s ‘hexagon’ alliance rivalling its enemies?

Days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu proposed forging a network of allied nations, including in the #Middle_East and #Africa, to stand against what he called “radical” adversaries, the country’s president is on an official visit to key ally, Ethiopia.

It is not yet known which Arab and African countries will form part of Netanyahu’s hypothetical “#hexagon of alliances”, which he said on Sunday will include Israel, #India, #Greece, #Cyprus and others to stand against their enemies in the Middle East.

Chief among those enemies is presumably #Iran and its network of resistance groups from #Hezbollah in #Lebanon to the #Houthis of #Yemen. Analysts doubt Israel could secure enough influence over nation-states to form a formal security pact.

However, the country is deepening its ongoing charm....

News: #Egypt denies report linking Red Sea access to #GERD flexibility

Egypt has categorically denied claims that it offered to help #Ethiopia secure access to the #Red_Sea in exchange for flexibility over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), according to Al-Ahram.

Citing a responsible Egyptian source, the newspaper said on Tuesday that reports suggesting Cairo was prepared to grant Ethiopia maritime access were “entirely unfounded” and had no basis in fact. The source reaffirmed that Egypt’s position on water security and the GERD “remains firm and unchanged.”

The denial follows a report by The National, which cited unnamed sources in Cairo as saying Egypt had conveyed a proposal to Prime Minister #Abiy Ahmed last week.

“No other states have the right to participate in any arrangements or understandings concerning the Red Sea,” the source added.

Press Freedom under pressure in #Ethiopia

Citing a letter from the Ethiopian Media Authority announcing the suspension of Addis Standard’s registration certificate, Muthoki Mumo, Africa Program Coordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists, warned of a “drastic deterioration of press freedom in Ethiopia, one that “belies the hopes many had when Abiy Ahmed became prime minister.”

Mumo was speaking at the Africa Editors’ Forum, held during this year’s Africa Media Festival in Nairobi, which is taking place from 25–26 February under the theme “Resilient Storytelling: Reimagining Media Freedom.”

Earlier this week, CPJ urged Ethiopian authorities to immediately restore Addis Standard’s registration after the regulator revoked its online media license effective February 24. “This is not regulation, it is retaliation,” said Angela Quintal, accusing authorities of weaponizing vague legal provisions to silence independent journalism.

News: “Closing independent media outlets like #Wazema and #Addis_Standard is an attack on freedom of expression and democratic principles” – #EPRP

The #Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party (EPRP) has condemned the closure of independent media institutions, describing actions against outlets including Wazema and Addis Standard as “an attack on freedom of expression and democratic principles,” as the Committee to Protect Journalists (#CPJ) called on authorities to immediately restore Addis Standard’s registration, warning that the move amounts to retaliation rather than regulation.

In a statement issued today, 25 February 2026, the party said shutting down independent media, revoking licenses of international outlets, and harassing media professionals undermines the country’s democratic trajectory.

“Preaching free and democratic elections while banning media, arresting and chasing away journalists, and locking down the civic space is mocking the public...

One-third of #Somalis to face hunger in March: #UN officials

Some 6.5 million people, or about a third of Somalia's population, will face crisis levels of hunger through March, an increase of 1.7 million since January, UN officials warned.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday at the UN headquarters via video link, World Food Programme (#WFP) Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response Ross Smith said the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (#IPC) report for Somalia, released on Tuesday, confirmed fears that the humanitarian situation in Somalia has significantly worsened.

"Of these, two million of the most vulnerable women and children are expected to face severe hunger," with over 1.8 million children under the age of 5 to face acute malnutrition in 2026, he said.

Smith said Somalia is in the midst of a very complex hunger crisis, where two rainy seasons have failed, conflict and insecurity....
