#Op_ed: #Djibouti: Pillar of stability, not a "rentier fortress" in decline

In a rebuttal to an op-ed titled "Crumbling of Rentier Fortress: Ethiopia’s Maritime Pivot, Decline of Djibouti’s Monopoly," Naguib Ali Taher, Communications Officer for the Republic of Djibouti, firmly rejects the characterization of his nation as a “crumbling rentier fortress.” He dismisses the portrayal as both “inaccurate and dismissive,” arguing that it misrepresents the geopolitical reality of the Horn of Africa.

Taher contends that Djibouti remains “an undeniable bedrock of stability” within a volatile region—a status validated by the presence of major #American, #French, #Chinese, and #Japanese military installations.

The author further brushes aside accusations of authoritarianism and regional meddling, labeling them "tabloid-style slander."

In an open letter dated 20 February 2026, the groups said ongoing and unresolved conflicts, entrenched impunity, and rising regional tensions are placing civilians at grave risk.

They cited reports by the Office of the #UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (#OHCHR) of heavy weapons use, drone strikes, and arbitrary detentions, warning that space for de-escalation is rapidly shrinking.

#Sudan slams #Uganda for hosting paramilitary chief

Sudan's army-aligned government on Sunday criticised #Kampala for hosting rival paramilitary chief Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, slamming his reception by Uganda's president as an "affront to humanity".

#Hemeti on Friday met with Ugandan President Yoweri #Museveni at #Entebbe's State House, a day after a United Nations probe found his forces had committed acts of genocide in #Darfur.

Sudan's foreign ministry on Sunday criticised the meeting, saying the #RSF's atrocities had been "documented by the international community and condemned by regional organisations of which Uganda is a member", including the African Union & the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (#IGAD).

Daglo, speaking during his visit, said he travelled to Uganda after President Museveni was approached by the Sudanese army seeking his mediation.

His visit came a week ...

News: #Somalia in talks with #Pakistan over $900m deal for 24 JF-17 fighter jets

Somalia is in advanced negotiations with Pakistan to acquire up to 24 JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets under a defence package reportedly valued at around $900 million, according to Somali and Pakistani media reports.

If concluded, the agreement would mark #Mogadishu’s largest defence procurement since the collapse of the central government in 1991.

The reported talks gained momentum following an early February visit to #Islamabad by a Somali Air Force delegation led by Commander Mohamud Sheikh Ali. The visit underscored Mogadishu’s stated intention to rebuild its air force and regain sovereign control over national airspace after decades of conflict and reliance on foreign partners.

A Somali defence ministry official was quoted by regional media as saying the potential acquisition reflects a push...

News: #Ethiopia’s #Tigray region is caught between past conflict and fears of another

Residents of Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region say rising political tensions and economic hardship are reviving fears of another devastating conflict, just over three years after the #Pretoria peace agreement ended two years of war.

In #Mekele, the regional capital, tour guide Gebreegziabher Berehe says tourism has collapsed amid growing uncertainty. He describes empty ATMs, dwindling bookings and mounting living costs, warning that even the prospect of renewed fighting has deepened both economic and psychological strain.

“There is a tense calm,” he said, adding that many residents are weighing whether to leave while they still can, recalling the communications blackout and travel restrictions imposed during the previous war.

Tensions have reportedly escalated between federal authorities in Addis Abeba and the Tigray People's

#US can access minerals, military bases in #Somaliland, minister tells AFP

Somaliland is willing to give the United States access to its minerals and military bases, a minister has told AFP, as the breakaway region of Somalia seeks international recognition.

Israel became the only country in the world to recognise Somaliland's independence in December -- something the territory has been seeking since declaring its autonomy from Somalia in 1991.

The government in #Mogadishu still considers Somaliland an integral part of Somalia even though the territory has run its own affairs since 1991, with its own passports, currency, army and police force.

"We are willing to give exclusive (access to our minerals) to the United States. Also, we are open to offer military bases to the United States," Khadar Hussein Abdi, minister of the presidency, told AFP in an interview on Saturday.....

#Opinion: From #Pretoria to Tsimdo: #Tigray’s constitutional integrity, limits of external patronage

In this opinion piece, Tsegazeab Kahsu argues that resolving Tigray’s constitutional territorial integrity and right to self-determination is essential to ending Ethiopia’s political crisis. These claims are "anchored in the 1995 Ethiopian Constitution and in the lived realities of the Tigrayan people."

He warns that "genuine self-determination is not a matter for foreign sponsors to decide," noting that external interference often triggers humanitarian catastrophe. Tsegazeab critiques the "#Tsimdo" alliance with #Eritrea as a “profound irony,” turning a legitimate struggle into "proxy warfare."

He emphasizes that Tigray’s future depends on "internal legitimacy, constitutional struggle, and political agency rooted in the will of the people," anchored in full implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.

#Eritrea refugees held, tortured in #Egypt: NGO

More than 3,000 Eritrean refugees have been detained in Egypt this year and some have reported sexual violence and torture, a human rights #NGO said Monday.

Eritrea, a Horn of Africa country of approximately 3.5 million inhabitants, has one of the most repressive governments in the world.

Led since 1993 by President Isaias Afwerki, who has never held an election, its citizens face indefinite military service that leads many young men to flee the country.

A report published by Human Rights Concern – Eritrea (#HRCE) said more than 3,000 refugees from the country have been arrested in Egypt since January 10.

It collected testimonies and photographs to show that many had suffered "beatings and burns inflicted with hot water and corrosive substances", and sexual violence.

Two young children have reportedly died......

#Ethiopia’s House of Federation has ordered that the upcoming federal parliamentary elections in five electoral districts previously under the Tigray regional state to be conducted outside the Tigray administration’s oversight until “ownership claim is resolved.”

The decision was communicated to the National Election Board of Ethiopia (#NEBE) in a letter dated 3 February 2026, following NEBE’s publication in late January of electoral districts and polling stations for voter registration under the 7th General Election.

The Board publicized the districts based on pre-war electoral constituency to announce voter registration preparations in polling stations in the #Humera electoral district in the Western Zone of Tigray, specifically within Setit Humera, Kafta Humera, and Wolkait woredas.

News Update: #Tigray Interim Admin rejects #HoF decision, warns of constitutional violation, threat to Pretoria Agreement

The Tigray Interim Administration has strongly condemned the House of Federation’s decision to conduct federal parliamentary elections in five districts outside the administration of the Tigray Regional State, warning that the move risks undermining the Constitution and the #Pretoria peace agreement.

In a statement released by the Office of the Interim Administration’s President, #TIA said the people of Tigray played a central role in establishing Ethiopia’s federal system “through a bitter struggle and immense sacrifice alongside other oppressed peoples,” resulting in “a constitutional order and a new federal democratic system designed to serve all citizens with equality.”

Tigray Democratic Solidarity (#Simret) has called on the House of #Federation (HoF) to reconsider its decision to remove electoral constituencies in districts previously under the Tigray region administration, describing the move as “unconstitutional” and warning that it undermines Ethiopia’s federal system.

In a letter addressed to both the House of Federation and the National Election Board of Ethiopia (#NEBE), Simret said the decision constitutes an act that “undermines the country’s constitutional order, crushes institutional independence, and effectively declares ‘constitutional anarchy’.”

Citing Article 62 of the FDRE Constitution, the party argued that the House of Federation’s powers are limited to constitutional interpretation & the resolution of regional boundary disputes.

Simret further argued that boundary...

#Khartoum resumes school year after three-year war-induced hiatus

Schools in Khartoum state reopened this week after a three-year hiatus caused by #Sudan’s civil war, as officials scramble to repair hundreds of damaged buildings and accommodate a surge in returning students.

The Khartoum State Ministry of Education said on Monday that approximately 280 schools in the capital were damaged or destroyed during the conflict, which broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (#RSF).

Many schools were repurposed as shelters for displaced families or occupied by warring factions, while the displacement of teachers & students led to a total collapse of the city’s educational system.

Qariballah Mohammed Ahmed, Khartoum’s director of education, told Sudan Tribune that more than one million students are expected to enrol this year as families gradually return to the capital’s relatively stable neighbourhoods.

“The number of...

The world is becoming too hot for #coffee: the reason for the catastrophic rise in prices

In just two years, the cost of #Robusta and #Arabica beans has almost doubled

Just five countries account for about 75% of global coffee production. However, the annual number of hot days there has already increased by an average of 57, so it is unclear how much longer the plants will be able to withstand it.

According to The Guardian, global warming is making coffee cultivation increasingly difficult.

Temperatures unbearable for plants

#Ethiopia is traditionally considered the birthplace of coffee. This plant provides the main income for more than 4 million households and a third of the country's export earnings.

The "coffee belt" in Ethiopia is located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. For plants to bear fruit effectively, they need a certain temperature regime...
