#WFP condemns attacks on aid convoys, facilities in #Sudan

The World Food Programme has condemned a series of recent attacks on its trucks, assets, and facilities in Sudan, warning that the incidents have killed and injured humanitarian workers while disrupting delivery of life-saving food assistance to vulnerable civilians.

In a statement, the agency said four incidents over the past 10 days targeted humanitarian operations as aid workers were distributing food assistance. WFP described the attacks as unacceptable and stressed that humanitarian personnel and assets must never be targeted.

The organization also rejected what it called false social media claims alleging its trucks were transporting non-humanitarian items, saying such reports are unfounded and increase risks to aid workers and operations.

#Op_ed: Crumbling of Rentier Fortress: #Ethiopia’s maritime pivot, decline of #Djibouti’s monopoly

In this op-ed, Adam Daud Ahmed argues that for three decades, the Horn of Africa rested on a fragile arrangement: Ethiopia relied almost entirely on Djibouti for maritime access, while Djibouti turned geography into political and economic leverage. He notes, “That arrangement is now in terminal decline.”

Ahmed points to the January 2024 MoU between Ethiopia and #Somaliland on #Berbera port as the turning point, aimed at “diversifying its access to seaports.” For Djibouti—once handling over 95% of Ethiopia’s trade—the move threatens “a rent-based model” already strained by debt.

He emphasizes, “The Horn of #Africa is no longer organized around a single gatekeeper,” contending, “Rentier systems seldom survive erosion of monopoly; they either reform or they fracture.”

#Türkiye sends #drillship to #Somalia for first overseas mission

Türkiye on Sunday dispatched its deep-sea drillship Cagri Bey to Somalia for its first mission abroad, a move Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar called a historic step in the country’s offshore energy drive.

Speaking at a ceremony at Tasucu Port in Mersin, Bayraktar said the vessel is expected to reach Mogadishu in about 45 days and begin drilling in April at the Curad-1 well.

Türkiye and Somalia signed agreements in 2024 covering onshore and offshore oil and gas exploration. The seismic vessel Oruc Reis previously completed surveys in three offshore blocks.

Since the beginning of the year, Türkiye has signed strategic agreements with US-based ExxonMobil and Chevron and UK-based BP in oil and gas exploration, Bayraktar said. Another overseas offshore partnership agreement with an international company is planned for next week, he added.

Bayraktar said Türkiye aims for its national oil company to reach production of around 500,000 barrels of oil and gas per day by 2028, with a longer-term goal of increasing capacity to 1 million barrels per day.

#Sudan’s Democratic Bloc split over unauthorized talks in #Ethiopia

Public divisions emerged within Sudan’s Freedom and Change – Democratic Bloc on Sunday after member organizations held unauthorized meetings with international mediators in the Ethiopian capital, #Addis_Abeba.

The “Quintuple Mechanism”—comprising the #African_Union, #IGAD, the #United_Nations, the #Arab_League, and the #European_Union—is seeking to bridge the gap between Sudanese political forces to launch a process on the country’s future governance.

Democratic Bloc spokesperson Juma al-Wakil disavowed the delegation in Addis Ababa, stating the coalition “did not participate in the meeting and did not send a representative delegation.” He added that no authorization had been issued for any entity to represent the bloc in the consultations.

Al-Wakil, who is affiliated with Minni Minawi’s Sudan Liberation Movement (#SLM), said that if members participated, they did so in a “personal or ....

News: Poor market functionality persists across #Ethiopia despite slight easing of household costs

More than half of assessed #markets across Ethiopia showed poor functionality between late December 2025 and early January 2026, underscoring continued supply disruptions despite a slight decline in household expenditure costs, a recent Joint Market Monitoring Initiative factsheet indicates.

According to the report, more than half (52%) of assessed markets across Ethiopia were found to have poor functionality, with the highest prevalence reported in #Gambella (100%), #Amhara (74%), #Afar (67%), and #Oromia (63%).

The deterioration was largely linked to ongoing conflict, particularly in Gambella, Amhara, and Oromia, which disrupted trade routes and restricted trader movement.

Additional pressure came from fuel shortages and rising transportation costs that constrained commodity supply and weakened market integration.

#Opinion: From Disillusionment to Action: Questions #Tigray’s political class can no longer avoid

Tigray stands at an existential crossroads, where “how elites think, speak, and act matters as much as armies,” writes the author. He argues that the region’s political class faces deep disillusionment, forged through "years of sustained suffering without justice" and a largely unfulfilled peace process.

Yet, this collective exhaustion carries a grave risk. When skepticism eclipses strategy, Tigray confronts the threat of "collective political disarmament." Internal critique is essential, but advocating dismantlement under siege is not reform—it is "capitulation by proxy."

To survive, Tigrayan elites must adhere to a "minimal set of shared principles" prioritizing "collective survival over factional victory," refusing to legitimize "structures of collective punishment" or reduce justice to a bargaining chip.

News: #Tigray Independence Party blames #TPLF, federal authorities for stalled Pretoria deal; warns against “looming threat of war”

The Tigray Independence Party (#TIP) has warned of a potential return to conflict in Tigray, accusing the Tigray People’s Liberation Front leadership and the Federal Government of Ethiopia of failing to fully implement the #Pretoria peace agreement and protect the interests of civilians.

In a statement issued Sunday, the party said large parts of Tigray remain outside the regional administration’s control, while many displaced residents continue to lack durable resettlement solutions.

It also alleged that internal divisions within the TPLF and its military command have weakened institutions, fractured armed forces cohesion, and contributed to the region’s diplomatic isolation.

The party rejected what it described as attempts to mobilize the population for renewed conflict, arguing that another war would neither restore....
