In a statement issued today, the party said Yeshiwas was taken into custody yesterday, describing the arrest as part of what it called the government’s continued crackdown on citizens engaged in peaceful political activity.

“This is one of the countless acts that demonstrate the government’s ongoing suppression of citizens engaging in peaceful political activities,” the statement read.

The EPRP further argued that such actions cast doubt on the credibility of the upcoming elections, which ruling party officials have repeatedly pledged will be free, fair and democratic. Instead, the party said, the current

#Op_ed: Renewed Conflict, Repeated Failure: Why #Tigray's peace and recovery depends on women's inclusion

As fighting resumes, Tigray faces a perilous crossroads, writes Batseba Seifu on behalf of GEM Tigray. She cautions, "Any humanitarian, security, or political initiative that excludes women's leadership, perspectives, and lived experiences is bound to fail."

Batseba highlights that women have long been first responders, mediators, and caregivers, yet their voices are largely absent from formal decision-making. Gender-disaggregated research shows female-headed households face hunger 24% more than male-headed households, reflecting structural inequalities intensified by conflict. Humanitarian interventions often overlook these realities, leaving the most vulnerable unassisted.

The author emphasizes, “Only by placing women at the heart of response efforts can we hope to protect civilians, restore services, and build a durable, just peace for all.”

#Trump cannot end deportation protections for South_Sudanese nationals, #US judge rules

A federal judge on Thursday blocked U.S. President Donald Trump's administration from ending temporary protections from deportation that had allowed hundreds of South Sudanese nationals to live and work in the United States.

U.S. District Judge Patti Saris in Boston concluded that U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem had likely acted unlawfully by providing a "pretextual" reason for terminating South Sudan's Temporary Protected Status designation and not disclosing the real factor motivating her action.

That status is available to people whose home countries have experienced natural disasters, armed conflicts or other extraordinary events. It provides eligible migrants with work authorisation and temporary protection from deportation.

Noem in November published a notice terminating TPS for conflict-ridden South Sudan, saying the country no longer met the conditions for the designation, which was first issued in 2011.

Accordingly, voter registration, initially scheduled to begin on 14 February 2026, has been postponed and will now start on 07 March 2026.
