Ethiopia has formally submitted a bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (#AFCON), seeking to stage the continental tournament for a fourth time and for the first time in more than five decades, according to a report by state-owned media citing the Ethiopian Football Federation (#EFF).
The report said the bid was officially lodged with the Confederation of African Football (#CAF), marking Ethiopia’s return to contention for hosting the tournament it last staged in 1976. Ethiopia previously hosted AFCON in 1962, 1968, and 1976, and won the title on home soil in 1962.
If awarded hosting rights, Ethiopia would become the joint second country to stage the Africa Cup of Nations the most times, behind only Egypt (5).

A federal judge on Friday temporarily blocked U.S. President Donald Trump's administration from ending protections from deportation that had been granted to thousands of Ethiopians living in the United States.
U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston said he would issue an order delaying the February 13 effective date of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's termination of the Temporary Protected Status granted to over 5,000 Ethiopians in order to provide more time for a legal challenge to be heard.
Murphy, who was appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden, during a virtual hearing said an order administratively staying the effective date would allow DHS time to produce records detailing how it made its decision so he can then consider whether to block the agency's action for even longer.

Authorities in Tigray have issued coordinated warnings against what they describe as unjustified price hikes and market disruptions, amid heightened public anxiety linked to recent transport interruptions.
In statements released over the past two days, the Tigray Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations, the Tigray Interim Administration (#TIA), and the #Mekelle City Administration said prices of basic commodities have risen in several cities, including Mekelle, despite the absence of significant supply shortages.
The Chamber of Commerce said some traders have used the temporary suspension of #Ethiopian Airlines flights to & from Tigray as a pretext to raise prices on essential goods.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has welcomed a call by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, urging restraint amid renewed tensions in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, reaffirming that dialogue remains the only viable path to resolving outstanding issues with the federal government.
In a letter sent late on Saturday and addressed to the AU Commission Chairperson, the TPLF said it appreciates the African Union’s engagement in support of peace and stability in Ethiopia, noting that it takes “positive note” of the AU’s concern over recent developments in Tigray.
The party further expressed its readiness to engage constructively in any dialogue initiative facilitated by the African Union, including through the AU High-Level Panel on Ethiopia, aimed at advancing “peace, confidence-building, and reconciliation.”
